2012 is basically just an interior upgrade
I have zero problems with my 2011 JKU Rubicon lifted on 35's on the highway since well its a Jeep and isnt meant to cruise at 70 with ease. Got my 2011 for 6k less than what it wouldve cost me for a 2012 with the same options. I used that money to lift and upgrade the tires, wheels and bumpers. For those whining about the power in the 3.8's save your money and get a 2011 then buy the RIPP SC with the money saved over getting a stock 2012. Sounds like some folks on here should've bought a Grand Cherokee rather than a Wrangler.
A buddy of mine (currently has manual 2011 rubicon unlimited) test drove a 2012 manuel jku and he said it was a huge difference and very nice being able to merge onto the highway
However, now he would like to go with a two door and when he selected all the same options and packages that he got with the jku the 2012 was $1,000 more.
Bottom line- the only difference between 2011 and 2012 is a motor that does have a noticable amount of more power, but your paying a lot more for it. We figured close to $3000 more. And you can get painted fenders on any package. awsome.

I'm anxious to get my first Jeep and am leaning towards a 2012. These are good points you make and I see I can get a 2011 Rubi (stripped down, no options) for 25k+ via USAA. That is tempting, but when you consider the fuel savings with the Pentastar that almost makes up for the $3k difference you've come up with. I haven't seen any official mpg stats for the 12 yet, but based on what I've seen it is going to be an average of 19 mpg (vs. average of 17 mpg for the 11). When you factor in $3.50 per gallon over 100k miles there is a $2100 savings in gas with the 12. Granted, the insurance will likely be higher on the 12 so that adds higher cost on the 12 side. Personally, I aim for minimum 150k miles on a vehicle (have an F150 daily driver with 263k at the moment) so if the 12 lasts that long, the extra cost of the 12 is more than covered.

Holy cow!!!! Today I test drove a top of the line 2012 Rubicon Unlimited Automatic (Yes with a matching top and fender flares). Anyways leather interior and navigation, basically "THE WORKS". Let me tell u this, in town there was ALMOST no difference!!! It shifted a lot but lacked that ummfff that I truly thought this new engine was going to have!!! Yeah when I was on the highway u could feel a bit more power but "it's a jeep" screw the highway!!! My 2010 auto with 5.13's felt the same as the 2012 around town. What a unbelievable disappointment!!! Now if u put larger tires on u r back to the same dogging as before!!!!
Now as to when I did feel a different was when I drive a 2012 2door bone stock and manual. Grant it the jeep had the smallest wheels possible and it was lighter but this was when u could really feel it just wanting to take off an when u did u could hear a different engine. Here is the problem, I want 4door and even though I enjoy manual i have driven it my whole life that now I enjoy auto.
BASICALLY, 4dr auto was a huge disappointment! And the 2dr manual with tinnie tiny none jeep looking wheels felt good.
I leave u with this.......NOTHING!! Once again I really wanted to upgrade to the 2012 but in my opinion not with it!!! I hate saying that cause I was a big fan of it coming out. All I will feel that changed is the interior and to me it's not worth it!
I guess i will be supercharging
All of u that r on the fence with having to pick between a 2011 DEAL or a 2012. I would heavily recommend save the cash and get the 2011 deal. Just regear it cause I WILL have to anyways with the 2012 and/or supercharge it. With the saved cash u can have more HP at the rear wheel with a RIPP supercharge 2011 then with a 3.6L 2012

I test drove a 2010 with 3.73s in manual and I'm glad I waited for my Pentastar. Even with 3.21s, it smoothly and easily pulls in any gear from 1500 RPMs on. The difference is very noticeable, especially once you're moving at or approaching highway speeds.
I have a 2008 2-dr X auto and a 2012 2-dr Sport auto. Maybe the OP accidentally left the emergency brake on because the 2012 feels like it has 2 extra cylinders. And...my 2012 has 3.21s (victim of the early order gearing mixup). I already have installed an AEV 3.5" lift, spare tire carrier (with stock bumper), Pintlers, and 35" km2s. I'm regearing to 4.10 next week. Since my use is onroad (and deep snow) driving, opting for the Sport versus Rubicon, paid for my AEV/BFG upgrades, As for saving money by buying the old model, do the math. You will lose an equal amount on the 2011 on resale - so you are giving up the upgrades for basically no saved money in the long run.
