8spd just seems a little like overkill to me, I wouldn't want to have to shift that many times just to get to highway speed, unless they added a V8 or V10 I haven't heard about...

I'm driving a new Charger currently with a pentastar and an 8 spd. I like it a lot. I've been reading that Chrysler is going to make 8 and 9 speed transmissions standard across the whole line up next year?? Even the RAM is getting it in 2013 I believe, maybe 2014.

If they do, I wonder how easy it would be to swap out auto tranny's from the 5spd to 8spd, and still use the +/- feature...

As long as they do something about the terrible gearing...I rarely use 6th gear now.

Well the 8spd in the new Ram gets 25mpg with the pentastar, I'd imagine similar mpg from the wrangler when it comes, hopefully next year.

With more gears the engine can be tuned to run in a narrower power band. Means the engine can run clean and efficient. Chalk it up to CAFE and emissions requirements. I wouldn't be surprised to see engines run at a constant speed and use CV transmissions in the future.

That will be pricey when it's time for a rebuild...

The 8 speed would be an auto only. I've not heard any rumors of a 8 speed manual transmission. That would be like a big rig!
