Default 4 door OR 2 door?

Hey guys, I'm sure this has been posted a lot already, but could not find the exact info I am looking for when I did a search...

The position I am currently in is that I know I am going to purchase a new JK. I know I am going to purchase a Rubicon. I am relatively sure I am getting a
6 spd. What I cannot decide is if I should go with the 2 door or the 4 door.

I am curious if anyone that has driven both a 2 dr. JK Rubi and a 4 dr. JK Rubi has noticed any real difference in the power between the two. I would think the Unlimited would feel more underpowered because of the obvious added weight.

My thinking is that within the next 2-3 yrs. Jeep will definitely come out with a better engine for wranglers, whether it is the smaller Hemi, a diesel, or whatever. Everyone knows wranglers are in need of some more torque and hp. So, with that in mind, I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and get the Unlimited Rubi that may feel much more sluggish and then when Jeep introduces a more powerful engine purchase another 4 door, OR should I get a 2 door which may get better mileage, feel more addequately powered, and be a little cheaper, and then in a few years upgrade to a 4 door with better power...

I am of the mindset that the Unlimited is simply a more practical wrangler, plain and simple. My fiance also would prefer for me to get the Unlimited, but will still be happy with a 2 door. So I feel like I'm on a freakin teeter totter (spelling?)

To sum up the rambling above...for those that have driven both, do 4 doors seem to be noticeably underpowered when compared to the 2 door? Is there any real mileage difference noticed between the two? Do the 4 doors tend to depreciate quicker than 2 doors? Finally, is it, in your opinion, worth it to spend approx. $2500 more to get the 4 door Rubi vs. the 2 door Rubi at this time, with the current engine?

Thanks for being patient if you actually read that entire post...

I have a 2 door.
Get the 4 door.
If nothing else you will be glad to have the extra doors when you are going to dinner with friends. The 2 door is just not up to being all it can be. if you have the 4:10 gears that come in the Rubicon you will be just fine on power.

I also have the two door. I love it. The wife doesnt. I have been told that we are geting a 4 door when the 09 models come out. I stood my ground and told her....."yes dear, but it has to be a Rubicon" We came to an agreement.

Seriously though, I was wheeling with 6 other JK's weekend past. All of them 4 doors, 4 of them Rubi's. I was the only one who didnt get stuck that day. The less weight and shorter wheel base made a difference in deep snow.

But it is a PIA for rear passengers...(not that I would know.)
I love my 2 door, but will love a 4 door just the same

Rhonda and I both love our 2Dr Rubi's. Though for passanger carring the 4Dr is the way to go and for extra carring capisity as well. I have wheeled with a 4Dr and they do NEED a lift right away to make up for the extra length so it does not get stuck/high centered quite as easily.

got the 4 door, love it. When I was 22 I had a 2 door CJ, but now that I am 44, and 2 kids, the 4 door is so much better.

For me the 2-door was the way to go, if I had kids I would have definitely bought a 4-door. Off-road I think it's a wash, with each having their own pros/cons. Only you can really decide which is more fitting for how you'll use it.

I love my 2 door. It is a pain to get passengers in the back but I wouldnt no cuz I never go back there. I was worried about the room in the 2 door as well and had my heart set on a 4 door but so far I have not had a problem. I bought a spare tire bike rack and ski rack and have been able to take 4 people skiing\snowboarding with no problems. Ski boots on and everything. I am planning on buying a small trailer or roof rack for it just to make sure I have plenty of room. I love the 2 doors menuverability and offroad capability. Over all I am happy I went with the 2 door.

I test-drove both a 2- and 4-door. The 4-door's lack of power wasn't too bad around town, and was most noticeable (to me) on the highway.

That being said, power isn't everything. If you actually have a need for a 4-door vehicle (I don't - it's me and the wife, no kids), then get the 4-door.

Plain and simple - you can always tweek your engine or gears for a bit more performance but how easy do you think it will be to add a few doors?

I'm not sure how much difference there is in preformance between the 2/4 door but personally, this is my first Jeep and I went from a sports car to this and I'm fine with the preformance of my Unlimited. Now my views may be significantly changed when I got to 35" tires but I'm not really looking to take anyone at the light, you know?

Get the extra room

if you have a tow rig then your not to bad off but if you think you might be halin off on any big over night trips where you need to be able to pack camping gear and food ( dogs if you me) they there really just is not enough room in my 2 door. I just got back from a 100 mile 2 day beach drive and we had to just a hitch rack to bring all the gear we needed (and have space for dogs). if there had been and real offroading other that sand driving we would have been sol. so look at what you need the space you need and all that. If you just want a jeep for running around town looking cool and going to the lake of Saturday that a 2 door can fill you need. if you just looking for a jeep to play in and not drive to your Wheeling destination than a 2 door could be up your ally. If you want a little more jeep and need to drive you jeep to your back country play-in then a 4 door is Alot easier to do it with.
