Default Almost lost it today....( winter driving story)

I had a pucker moment this morning on the freeway as I was leaving town for a job a couple hours away. The road started to show some ice and snow cover...being a smart driver, I decided I needed to slow down....but right before I made that decision, I was on a sheet of ice and starting to skate around quite a bit....I let off the gas and knew not to hit the brakes....I corrected a few times, got it near sideways, kept my wheel movements gentle and smooth, let the JK slide where the ice wanted it to slide, across both lanes, back again....etc...etc....eventually it straightened out and slowed enough that I could get back on track....shifted into 4-hi and kept it under 55.....stock X tires BTW....it has done very very well in the snow and ice. I have only had to shift into 4wd twice in the slippery conditions. ESP does its job, yet lets me have some fun when I want to without getting into too much trouble.

On the topic of 4lo, today when I was also driving in the snow I would use 2wd on the main roads which were plowed, and then switch to 4lo on the side streets which were not plowed. This would result in me switch from 2wd to 4lo often. Is it o.k. to switch back and forth so often or should I just keep in one.

I havent used 4lo yet at all. But as long as you follow the recommended shifting procedures as outlined in the owners manual, you should be able to shift as much as you want or need too.

Those ice patches can be tricky. A month or so ago, we had a huge storm and I was driving at like 12pm and the suv in front of me was spining round and round, prettty scary stuff. I just kept on truckin' then the f*cker passed me and all the other cars... I guess some people don't learn their lesson.

Also, with the storm we got hamered by today, the jk performed perfectly. The only thing holding it back is the all season tires. I decided to have fun and take the long way to my destinations (tim hortons, grocery, convenience store lol) by going on side streets (unplowed with 10-20cm of snow) and I even took it out of 4wd for a while and it I didnt even feel a difference. I was really impressed, and the esp light only came on once in the 2min. I was driving in 2wd. It's times like these that make you appreaciate the jk more and more.

Some people are just stupid. Most people dont realize that it is 4wheel drive not 4 wheel stop. That being said my jk is the best snow vehicle I have ever had. While other trucks in chicago were all over the road the jk didnt even seem to know there was snow on the ground. I just cannot wait to get it out here to Montana. We have been getting good/bad pounding snowstorms. Good cuz I snowboard bad because all of the roads are closed so the shipping company cannot get my truck to me. My dads happy though because chicago has gotten a good bit of snow. He said its like driving a hot knife through butter. Couldnt have said it better myself. JK should be here next week hopefully in time for our next set of storms.

I took a winter driving class when I was 17, I'm almost 49.

That class has saved my but so many times here in MN.

Good job on the ice

We have missed all the snow in Minneapolis

Nice save. I'm glad to hear you didn't take out anyone or anything. Ice scares the crap out of me. I'm that guy cruising in the right lane at 25 when all the morons around here are flying by at 65 mph.
Better late and safe, than on-time and dead.
