Let's assume the total transaction cost is $8,000 to swap Jeeps, yours for a new 2013 or 2014.
$3700 in gas for a year of driving, 12,000 miles, 12mpg average
$2466 in gas for a year of driving, 12,000 miles, 18mpg average
Savings of $1234/year, more or less depending on how much you drive.
Transaction cost $8,000 / $1234 annual gas savings = 6.5 years to break even. This is when swapping the vehicle for better gas mileage becomes "worth" it.
The OP's 09 JKU Rubicon has done 28000 miles.
That's 7,000 miles per year and not 12,000.
It'll take more than 10 years to break even (and that's without counting interest on the initial payment), but there's still some saving.

... 285hp Pentastar ... no rattling ... new Jeep ... I'd go for it

Well it took awhile but I finally pulled the trigger on a '14 with the manual. Now let the waiting begin!

You won't be sorry, I went from an 08 auto to 13 manual and love it.
