Am I in the wrong?
Morally you are completely right. Its very cool the cop agreed with you because the guy in the Ram is obviously a douche bag.
But, lets say the guy got out of his macho-mobile and kicked in your quarter panel. He would be completely outside the law and totally wrong, and you would be in the right.
However, if you get out and kick his quarter panel in return, you are both guilty of whatever the charge would be for willfully damaging another's property.
I think if push came to shove, you'd both be legally in the wrong. Trouble is, it would be easy for him to prove you assaulted him with the extinguisher - but it would less than easy for you to prove he was assaulting you with diesel exhaust.
Best you can hope for is never hearing about this again. Could be a problem in a small town.

To bad you weren't in California. AFAIK, a citizen can turn in the license number of a vehicle that is blowing smoke and a fine will result, or the guy will be dragged in for testing, or both.
I agree with this. Which is why when you're spraying the fire extinguisher all over yell out, "Man, your truck is on fire! Get out before you die! It's on fire, man!!!" Be sure to liberally spray into the radiator area, trying to force the foam into the engine area where the fire is. When he gets out of the truck, you might just shoot some down that stovepipe for good measure.
By the way, for those who don't know, this ("coal rolling") is an escalating problem. It started as a protest of diesel drivers for those driving Priuses and sporting Obama stickers. Now it has escalated into silly envy of Jeep owners (had it happen to me the other day leaving a light--I just changed lanes and let the DB go). I expect that communities will be forced to pass laws to protect the peace. We all want to be free. We all want to be free of government intervention. But there is that very small percentage of individuals who make laws over silly things necessary. I think anyone with half a wit can see that the encounter OP describes could quickly escalate into manslaughter or murder if there are enough incidents.
