American Made
Fortunately alot of the after market products in the Jeep world are American Made however many are not. As I continue to build my vehicle the way I want it I have decided to add aftermaket parts that are only American Made and purchase tools made in the USA. A couple of questions about this subject.
How important is this too you?
What American based companies farm out manufacturing overseas?
Is it wishful thinking to try to build a very capable Jeep with all American Made parts?
If you know a part or product is American Made will you post it here?
If you know a part or product is NOT American Made will you post it here?
If you are a manufacturer that is American based and American Made will you post your name here?
I know we have friends to the North and friends Down Under that make great products so maybe this Jeep will end up 95% American Made.
Thanks for any input on the this thread.
Personal thanks to Dave and WOL after the 15th.

This is age old question(s) is interesting but difficult to answer because the globalization of the auto industry has completely blurred what "American made" means.
Do you mean sold by an American based company like Fiat Chrysler which is no longer 100% owned?
Do you mean manufactured in American inspite of using foreign made parts and/or materials?
Do you mean 100% assembled with American labor even by a foreign company?
Do products assembled in Canada count as American? Many things assembled in Canada have been considered American made.
I think I understand the gist of your question because it made sense in the past, but today IMO you have ask something more along the lines of "Would you prefer to buy a product that has MORE American labor and material content than one that has less?' as an example. In most cases it's hard to find out just how "American" a product really is.

If you do a search I believe there is already a thread on this, with a list of companies that manufacture their products in the USA. It was a few monthes ago, but that thread would really help you.

How important is this too you? Not very, we're part of a global economy and isolationism/protectionism is backward thinking.
What American based companies farm out manufacturing overseas? The vast majority, you'll need to research this to find any numbers.
Is it wishful thinking to try to build a very capable Jeep with all American Made parts? Probably. You need to define "American Made". Do all materials have to come from the US? Do all raw materials have to come from the US? How about the manufacturing tools used to make it, is something American made if imported equipment (CNC's, lathes, presses, etc) is used to make it? I'm not trying to be pedantic, but to point out that there's a big gray area here.
I know we have friends to the North and friends Down Under that make great products so maybe this Jeep will end up 95% American Made.
Just for the sake of argument, why would something made in Oz or Canada be different in your view? The money benefits someone on foreign soil, part of which then goes to a foreign government through taxes, and none of that benefits US citizens. Well, except that they then have money to buy US made products which we export; but that's also true for countries other the Australia and Canada.

Yes the answer to what American Made means is now blurred more now then ever. Of course the Jeep itself is made of parts that are mined and manufactured from all over the world and now more then when I purchased my vehicle in 2007 Jeep is a lesser an America company. So when I say American Made I think the best we could imply by that is a company thats base is on American soil, that banks in America, that the majority of its manufacturing process happens in the US and the majority of its paychecks and sub-contracted work goes to US citizens.
Thanks for the link to the tread already started, I did not see that.
Thanks for the info about LOD - Shrockworks and American Eagle.
As far as protectionism and isolationism being backward ways of thinking then Mr. gpd I am very backwards. The idea that the lines on the map are erased and that a large globalized world is a better place for all maybe "forward" ways of thinking but they are not correct. The world in reality only has so many resources and not enough to support the entire population and the current America standard of living. A standard I would like to see passed on to my son and his son. So I say it's a hyprocrite who talks about anti-protectionism and anti-isolationism and sports around a Jeep with 37" tires but yea maybe thats just me? There is simply not enough resources for the entire world to live that life style.
As far as Ozzy's and the Can's are corcerned I personally feel much better supporting long time allies and countrys that seem to share a like idea about the Western World and Christendom then communist states who trade with us only to bolster their own GNP.

The world is flat and becoming flatter. We are moving more and more into a global economy. That parts are made in Germany, China, and then sent to the USA for assembly. It would be hard to say if anything is truly "American Made". Your referenced Shrockworks as American Made and I agree. But I do wonder does all there steel they use come from the US? Does that matter to you?
