ARB vs AEV Snorkel?
Looking to purchase a snorkel for my 2014 jk. I see that arb and aev both offer one but what is the difference, any body have problems with either? Or is the difference simply that they are mounted in different places..
Thanks!
Thanks!
I've got a Volant snorkel. I love it, but most others don't. I've seen the AEV, Rugged Ridge, and even River Raider. But at all the rides I've ever been to, I've never seen anyone with an ARB snorkel installed on a JK. There has to be a reason for that, whether it's cost, reliability, or difficulty of install....or a combination.
Both are great snorkels! I have seen both on Jeeps but haven't heard any complaints by those who have them. I'm leaning towards the AEV because it is made specifically for the Jeep and there's ample install examples while the ARB seems more designed for the Land Cruiser.
AEV definitely the easier instal as the ARB one takes a very tortuous route
. I went with the ARB more for the look

Topped off with a ten inch Donaldson prefilter. NB right hand drive.

Installed an AEV on mine, and an ARB on a friend's Land Rover Disco. The AEV was a ***lot*** easier install, partly because I have an air nibbler for cutting the hood, and partly because AEV provides a trim piece that covers all sins in that cut.
The LR ARB install took two very large hole saws (which weren't in my Craftsman hole saw kit, so we had to buy). These hole saws are very difficult to control at that size in metal. I let my friend start the first hole since it was his vehicle. A mistake. The saw jumped out of the pilot hole and nicked the metal adjacent to it. There is no provided piece to cover such mistakes.
Since he was inexperienced at drilling with hole saws, I cut the remaining two holes. Tough, but doable. Not recommended for the inexperienced.
Time to finish my AEV install by myself: About 3 hours. The LR ARB install, two people? About 6 hours. Would have been just slightly longer for one person (chasing his own tools, etc).

The only reason for that is that AEV is American and ARB Australian. Go to Oz or the UK and you'll often find the ARB the snorkel of choice. Both are great snorkels, high quality and do the job asked, so it's really just a preference for the position of the snorkel which is the deciding factor if costs are the same (but don't buy one of the cheap Chinese copies). That, and as Mark said, the Safari snorkel is slightly more difficult to install. I personally chose the ARB as I prefer the way the main intake part of the snorkel sits hidden behind the fender and the only part you see from the front is the trunk. I had it in my head at the time of install that the ARB would probably provide better aerodynamics and be less prone to wind whistle but I've no evidence to prove that either way.
I personally went with the AEV snorkel. Price was good and also looked better aesthetically to me.
