Default Auto or 6-Speed

Hello Everybody,

I'm looking to buy 09 Rubi in a month or two. But i can't seem to decide if i want Auto or 6 Speed. I currently have ZJ as my trail rig which is auto. On a rocky trail or steep inclines, it's great, you just put it in 4low, step on the gas pedal and enjoy the ride, where with standard transmission it seems to get quite challenging and bumpy. For example if you get on a big rock with one wheel, and you didn't have enough momentum to roll over it, jeep would roll back since it seems it's harder to catch it with your cluch and you'll need to bump it now to overpass it, since it looks to me you can't slowly crawl it, as you would with auto. On the road, i would deffinatly choice 6 speed since i like to have full control of my RPMs.

I never drove a jeep with standard transmission on the trail, so I'm asking those who did. Which trans. do you prefer, standard or auto, and why.

I like a auto but it never gets offroad so I really couldnt give a honest answer to your question, but it seems like most of the offroaders like the manuals.

Auto is good, but if you like to off-road, manual is much better. You have the full control of the gears, and it's more powerfull.

I've wheeled both, and they both have their advantages in my opinion...but overall I'd have to say I prefer wheelin' with the Auto, driving around with the Manual. Gearing makes a big difference though....if I had lower gearing in my 6-speed I would probably enjoy it better off road as it would make it easier to control on certain obstacles.

Go with the 6spd. You're going to have 4.10 gears and the low t-case. I usually just put it in 4lo and 1st and let the gearing do the rest, and plus it's a blast to drive on the highway.

I have the 6 speed, and I am very happy with it. Funny thing is every other vehicle i have owned over the years was Auto. I told myself, it's a Jeep it has to be manual.

It's completely a matter of opinion. Personally, I don't want the hassle of a manual transmission so I buy automatics. It sounds like an automatic would be the best fit for you.

I wish I went with the stick because you can get MUCH better mileage with one.

Tgrt may be right for you. Personally, I've driven manuals all of my life, though my off-roading experience is limited. But, clutching and shifting is second nature, even in rocky areas. I don't even think about it. Until I stall. But, stall happens.
