Default Auto Insurance on Modified Jeep - Lesson Learned!!

So I call Progressive today to put my new 2012 JKU on my insurance. They casually ask if it has been modified. I reply "yes" and they ask about the lift. I say 4.5" and BAM, uninsurable!!!!!!!!

So...if an insurance agent asks how big your lift is. YOU SAY 4" or less!!! (This goes for ALL of the standard insurers)

BTW, for those that didn't know it, both Progressive and Geico offer performance part insurance; things like lifts, tires, wheels, superchargers, etc. Progressive is up to $5,000 and Geico actually calculates by how much you tell them you have invested in mods. $15,000 in Performance Parts insurance with Geico only cost me an extra $6.

FYI, if you get in a wreck and gave a wrong lift height, they could deny your claim.

I was on the fence between Geico and Progressive and learned an interesting difference. Geico factors in mod depreciation and will not cover full replacement. Progressive's coverage is replacement cost.

Got USAA, lots of military wheel Jeeps and other rigs. Anybody had good or bad experiences with them?

Generally speaking if you're on a marked trail, anything identified by the city, county, state or federal, as a trail that is approved for Jeeps will count under your insurance. Here in Colorado, guys are rolling and damaging their rigs all the time and I have yet to hear of a claim denied. Simple fact is, if you apply the Tread Lightly way of life and stay on marked and sanctioned trails, you'll be okay.

True, but Geico has no real cap. Progressive is $5K. I'll take my depreciated $15K over $5K.

Also true about denying the claim, but AEV makes a 3.5" too and good luck with the agent trying to figure out which one is on my Jeep. And that's IF they can even figure out which lift it is. Now if you're running a 6" lift w/ 40s and try to say its a 3", you MAY get caught. They won't be able to tell .5"

I originally had Geico and the Underwriter (the person that counts - not the Agent) said they didn’t cover a winch, and even with my 2.5” lift didn’t want to insure it. I already had coverage with them and they sent me a letter that said they would drop the Jeep when it was time to renew.

I now have Progressive and they cove my Jeep with up to 9K of extra parts (more than 9K is more work to obtain). My winch, lift, all parts, and “going off-road” are all covered.

My policy is to be open and honest with the company and see what they offer. Why lie to them?

I believe in honesty in all things and circumstances, which is why I didn't think twice about divulging my lift size today. Look where it got me, they dropped my policy. If I tell Geico I have a 4.5" they won't insure me either.

So, if I don't lie about .5" I can't get insured. Period. Progressive dropped my new Jeep like a hot potato today because of the 4.5" lift.

Yup, they told me with a 2.5" lift I'm golden, but a 4 or more (I think) no go. Geico told me 4" was too much too.

I guess that's part of the price of getting a bigger lift...
