Battery Disconnect Swtich -- Help...
Has anyone ever used one of these on their vehicles?
Its a battery disconnect switch.
The top one has a small lead so you won't lose your radio settings. Not sure about the bottom one?
I'm really thinking about getting one -- Partly because of the anti-theft possibilities (I work in DC) and partly because we sometimes care for a sick relative who is getting Alzheimer’s. The last thing we want is to have him tearing up the street in the JK. (If you never had to deal with this, its not as easy as saying - "Just hide the keys")
Any thoughts on these? Which one might be better to use over the other??

I have used the one on the bottom for years drag racing. They are required by the NHRA. They are used on the positive side and are supposed to make the vehicle DEAD. No radio, no nuthin. I'm sure there are trails that require them as well. If you flip your rig, officials need some way to make sure power is OFF. Usually, they don't allow for radio memory provision. They want it DEAD. Now, I speak mainly from a drag racing perspective. All or some of this may different in the 4X4 world.
For street use, I like the top one. Note the fused link provided. This keeps all the presets for your electronics active, while would still not provide power for starting. I'm prejudiced...have used the top one on rigs other than Jeep. It functions well.
Just a thought... Why not wire the switch in series at the starter terminal? The battery would still be tied in, the lights, radio, etc would still work as normal BUT if a thief tried to actually start it power couldn't reach the starter! Plus if the thief opened the hood and saw that the battery was actually tied in he might not want to hang around and troubleshoot the cause of why it doesn't want to start. Just a thought... Take care... Mike
