Body damage
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to repair this other than taking it into a body shop?

I'd pull that out with a slide hammer and then cover it with AEV corners if I were you. The damage is bad but it can be easily fixed and covered up.

Ugh, that sucks man. I damaged my rear quarter panel on both sides, with separate incidents. I ended up slapping on some PSC corner armor and called it a day. It would be more work considering the tire carrier, but if you just took that to a body shop for repair, you're open to the same thing happening. Did someone tap you from behind or did you back in to something, with the pressure on the carrier pushing that in?

You can get in behind that. Therefore, the likely best way to repair it would be to use a dent push rod going at it from the back side.
Something like this kit.

There's a lot of YouTube videos which show how to use a push rod to push out dents going at the dent from the back side.
Here's a couple examples:
.
Pull that rear tail light out and go to work.
