Default Chrysler in deal to source seats from India

http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv...OM902520080210

MUMBAI (Reuters) - U.S. car maker Chrysler LLC's Indian unit has signed a 4 billion rupee ($101 million) contract with a New Delhi-based car seat maker to source seats for its Jeep Wrangler, an Indian newspaper reported on Sunday.

This was just the beginning of Chrysler's strategy to outsource automobile parts from Southeast Asia and negotiations were on for more such contracts, the Business Line paper said, citing an unnamed senior company official.

"We buy $40 billion worth of supplies each year. We would like to procure as much as possible from South-East Asia," the official said in the report.

The seats will be fitted in the Wrangler vehicles being made at Chrysler's Toledo unit in the United States, the report added.

Private equity firm Cerberus CBS.UL bought an 80 percent stake in Chrysler from Daimler (DAIGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) last year.

Glad I got my TJ...

no, India's ok, eventually (read as in 1,000 years) it will be a true world economy...

its funny that its cheaper to build stuff over there and ship it back, than just make it here...

Of course, in some countries you don't have enviro, labor or other issues :-/

Just make sure you blow your 'tax advance' (Since, really your 'free' $600 is just an advance on your 09 return) on something made in the USA... Soon as I find something, I'll let you know...

There's plenty of stuff made in the USA. Just you as a consumer need to do a little work to find it sometimes.

Stuff like this makes me mad. Just keep as much work in America, even if it's a little more expansive.

Unfortunately these shifts to cheaper labor/costs will cause some pain to the US job market......

"The Detroit-based auto maker said it was offering a new round of buyouts to all 74,000 of its U.S. hourly workers who are represented by the United Auto Workers.......GM was profitable in every region outside North America"
(source: reportonbusiness.com)

That is a layoff of potentially 74,000 people - although they anticipate 16,000 at the end of it all.....cheaper labor at $28.00/hour rather than $56.00 - is that right? or is it half of $28.00/hr...anyhow, you can't make money in the North American market as a mass manufacturer and compete against India, China etc.....those people get paid pennies a day!

I (although Canadian) buy American Made products for my dirtbike and get it shipped here (and yes I pay a premium) but it is well worth it. I'm actually making a trip to California to get a lift and bumpers (American made....well, except for the Arb front bumper)...... If the car manufacturers would stop making crap & spending money in the wrong places, then I think people would pay more......now, Chrysler will get seats from India to make a profit....shame - - - next they'll get them manufactured elsewhere.....dang....

Was that a soapbox?

...There's no tying a ribbon on it... it's a damn shame.. but I worry about the quality slipping if the quality control isn't maintained with overseas/outsourced manufactuaring. Interesting you mention the ARB front bar... it's actually less expensive for you guys to buy it ..than for us in Australia... where it's produced... same with OME suspension... A little frustrating to say the least.

I was in Malaysia a few years ago and found a Mahindra manufactured Willy's in a parking lot. The "Jeep" had no top and I got a very good look at it. While I was drooling over this newly manufactured "Willy's" the owner came out. They actually opened the hood. Flat 4 banger and all. I found the detail to be very impressive. I looked like an exact copy of the old WWII Jeeps

This being said, I would still hate to see the Jeep brand be sold to Mahindra

So is this the truth to the M&M buyout rumor or is this just the beginning?
