Hopefully "significant refreshing between now and then" means more engine options, like the diesel and maybe a V8.

I cant remember exactly where I read it but the new 3.0 diesel should be an option in the JK around 2015 right before the next model comes out. The idea is to spur final model year sales...

Fiat actually already has a turbo version of the 3.6 designed but I strongly doubt it will end up in a Jeep. It is slated for higher end models.

The poor engineering of Jeep is amazing; a 13' JKU is epa rated 16 city/ 20 highway, and a 14' Chevy Siverado that weighs maybe 1200 lbs more(?) is rated 18 city/ 24 highway.

While I agree more could be done to increase the Wrangler's fuel economy, the biggest issue seems to be aerodynamics - and "Jeepers" very much dont want chrysler to screw with the classic styling cues of the wrangler (ie. Flat grill, Flat Windshield, etc). That being said, as long are you're driving a rolling box, your MPG will be significantly lower - pick ups don't have the best aerodynamics, but they are far ahead of a jeep wrangler in that category.

If and when jeep does make the wrangler more aerodynamic, the reaction is probably going to be much like the reaction to the new cherokee.

It's not poor engineering, it is sticking to what a wrangler is designed to do and the iconic body styles. Each time there is a redesign people bitch and moan about it but there is no mistaking a wrangler no matter what year you are looking at.

I also did read that a diesel option will be available in the 2016 model year at a premium cost as it is already available in the grand cherokee for 4500.

The Jeeps normally have 3:73, or even 4:10 gearing except for a sport with 3:21. My guess is that the Silverado you are talking about will have something in the line of 3:09. BIG Difference. And don't forget about off road tires versus super low resistant road tires.
