Default Chrysler to go chapter 11 next week

According to channel 2 news. Fiat will continue the deal right through the bankruptsy. As long as Jeep is OK, i'm fine.

Yeah, but what will that do for those lifetime warranties? Not that it affects me; I bought mine a few months before they offered them, and my Jeep now has 34K miles, so it's almost out of warranty anyway.

So if I have warranty work that needs to be done, should I take it in ASAP?? Does this mean that any and all warranties will be voided? Will most service centers close? Sorry for the naive questions... kinda scared about losing any kind of factory support base. Jeep is separate, right?

It affects me but I honestly don't care. One of the reasons I have been holding off installing a lift is because it voids my warranty. If the warranty goes away, it makes it a little easier for me to put the lift on.

Don't believe lifts will void warranties. They might void certain replaceable parts that are usually under the warranty, (increase angle of <insert part> due to lift caused failure).

The government or Obama, has mentioned that warranty's will be honored under one of his bail out programs. We will see. Also, Chapter 11 is a reorganization bankruptcy, doesn't mean the end of the company filing it.

From what I understand Chapt. 11 may actually be a good thing for Chrysler since it allows them to get their heads above water and out of their asses.

Default Any inside info?

Does anyone here have any inside dope on what this all means in buying new? I'm about to go get a new 2009 and I wonder if the dealers will drop the prices any further past employee plus as Chap 11 is not a confidence builder!

If it's anything like what's being planned for GM, and I imagine it will be, it's going to be quite quick. They're not going to let Chrysler sit in court for weeks at a time while everything is negotiatged. All that will be done beforehand.

So with that in mind I don't see why they'd offer anything special in terms of deals. If the gov't is guaranteeing that they're not going to liquidate there's no reason to. If I understand it correctly, gov't is going to impose terms on Chrysler's creditors for having their debt paid back - they'll all take a hit. They'll also have to sort out their other main source of debt, legacy costs. Wouldn't be surprised to see gov't guarantee it in some capacity. I think Obama gave a speech saying that gov't would cover warranties during bankruptcy process.

Hopefully they come out of it with their heads above water and better able to deal with the recession. In theory there is no reason for them to get rid of the lifetime warranties because they'd still be producing vehicles. If they get chopped up and Jeep gets sold to another company then those lifetime warranties are dead in the water.
