Default Classic question, but seriously need opinions!

Alright, I know this is beating a dead horse, but I've searched and read so many threads on so many forums my head is spinning. I've been shopping JK's for the last few months and I'm within a couple weeks of pulling the trigger.

Here's my issue: I need 4 doors for the kids and cargo space, but manual JKU's are tough to find in a hundred mile radius. My last 3 wranglers (2 TJ's and a YJ) have all been manuals so I have no real idea of how happy I'll be driving an automatic. In the beginning I was solid on "I'm only buying a 6spd and that's it." but now with my limited choices and some of the issues I've read with the 6spd...considering the automatic. I'm worried that after having a manual trans in my last 3 wranglers, will I be happy with an auto?

I know most people are going to say it's a matter of personal preference and I totally understand that, I'd like some feedback from the JK community. Also, anything I need to be cautious of on the automatic if I go that route?

Thank you to all that respond, any opinions are greatly appreciated.

It is a big decision and really "can't be changed" once you buy it. It's not like a Rubicon or a X. It's like a 2dr or 4dr decision. If you want the manual, I say wait it out and get it. I personally would be disappointed with an automatic, at least the "1985 technology" 4-speed automatic that is available.

Default Just you driving?

I have always driven manual and that is what I prefer. When I had a 5 speed I did let my wife drive it on occasion but I really wasn’t that happy about it the way she would fail to shift, revving the engine. Now with the 6 speed I won’t even let her get near the jeep with a key. So my advice would be if you are comfortable driving a manual and the only one driving it, go for it. If you have a wife or girl friend that might be getting behind the wheel, that aren’t that good with a manual, get the auto. Might save you money and pulling out your hair later.

Good point! Luckily my fiance is OK at driving a manual. She does good with my TJ, but I'm pretty much the only driver. I'm on Autotrader as I type this sifting through hoping to find something to pop up. Only one I found that fits...called the dealership on wednesday and talked to a salesman...then left 2 messages the last 2 days...can't get a call back. I love how the auto industry is crying about sales but I'm ready to buy and can't get a return call uh...um...

Why not order exactly what you want? There's really no price penalty (the dealership makes out because he doesn't tie money up in inventory). The only down side is the delay--seems to be running six to eight weeks, based on what I've seen on the forum.

X2 - I counldn't find exactly what I wanted (which included a 6 speed) in stock anywhere so I did the factory order. Waiting was a bitch (1 day short of 6 weeks) but I got exactly what I wanted and it was worth it.

Go with the 6 speed imho
