Default Coasting question

I have another Jeep newbie question I have an 2010 JK auto and I noticed when I let off the gas to coast, it almost seems some kind of braking is being applied and my speed drops off dramatically, a lot faster than I would normally expect , is this normal? I've only driven FWD cars in past and they usually would coast at a good clip for quite awhile.

The Jeep is heavy and has a lot more drag than a car. There are no brakes applied.

I.E. "it's a Jeep thing"

The drag coefficient of a Jeep Wrangler is about .58 so it kinda has air brakes.

I have a 6 speed and when you take it out of gear and coast it slows down real fast.

You have to be careful of headwinds, cause if you stop and take your foot off the brake you will get blown backwards

Na just kidding on the blowing backwards

Thats what we get for buying vehicles shaped like shoe boxes.

My wife's car is a Honda Element and our friends make fun of us for the lack of aerodynamics in our family vehicles. The shoe box and the toaster.

Just think of all the money you will save on brake pads!
Just kidding, I wondered the same thing when I first started driving the JK.

I have been wondering the same thing ever since I bought my 2010 2 door automatic Sahara in September. We all know aerodynamics are bad but that is not the problem in this case. At 40 mph and 20 mph when trying to coast, it literally feels like the brakes are engaging. (every passenger confirms this when I say, "doesn't it feel like I just hit the brakes?" and they all reply with yes and I lift my feet up to prove I am not riding the brakes.) I was looking on the internet to see if this thing had some sort of hill decent system. I have never been in a car that hated coasting as much as this thing. I am almost positive it has to do with the transmission. I think the weight and aerodynamic thing is over-blamed for the bad gas mileage. Coasting is practically the most important aspect to getting good gas mileage and my JK's trans just won't let me get the most out of this thing.

It definitely feels like it, doesn't it?

Last night I was getting off 95 going about 60 and going DOWN a ramp, so I let off the gas. I looked at the speedometer and within seconds I was down to 35. Granted it was cold as balls and the wind was ridiculous, but still... having to accelerate going DOWN a ramp that you entered going 60 sure sparks some confusion.

I have noticed this too, but just figured "It's a Jeep Thing". It definitely does not down shift, but slows rapidly.
