I think you'll probably hear that they are highly over rated.

For something that is highly over rated, you do see a lot of them on rigs.

I know of one person who had one, and he sweated bullets every river ford of thirteen we did the one trip he went with us. And those without snorkels soon were sporting them.

Thanks for the input.
I've heard the good and the bad about CAI. I live in California and the cars sold here are so restricted because of our emission laws. I can't even have it shipped to California.

What about exhaust system. Any thoughts on that?

I think the consensus is that neither are going to make any real difference in MPG gains. I swapped out my exhaust bc I wanted my Jeep to have a little growl. A CAI would do that too at higher rpm.

The CAI's duct is slightly larger than stock ...
More air flow to your engine ....plus it sounds really sweet !!

The intake duct may be larger, but the throttle body, intake manifold, and intake ports are still the same size. You only get power out of CAIs when you port the head, which I haven't heard of anybody doing.

Out of any CAIs out there, the Volant is probably the best. It's the only one I've seen with a decent air box protecting the filter. The 100,000 mile Powercore filter is probably the only reason I still have it. I have the prefilter mesh screen over my filter to help protect it from splashes, but I still wouldn't be doing any fording with my intake. The only thing I've noticed with it is slightly lower intake temps (10-15 degrees less than ambient). There is no noticeable difference in HP or MPG. I'm planning on getting a supercharger at some point in the near future, so I'll probably go back to the stock intake when I do that.

Very true. A CAI is not something you should be using with the type of wheelin' you do.

On the "only with porting will you get an improvement". Not true. As stated a 10-15 degree drop in inlet air temp will provide more oxygen to the motor and therefore more power.

When crawling on a trail a CAI is not going to give you a 10-15 degree drop in inlet air temp, pulling hot air from under the hood. The only system that will pull in cooler air for your engine is a snorkel.
