People give the impression that a decent build quality and top notch off road ability are too much to expect in one vehicle. Charge me an extra $1000 of a roof the doesn't leak and better material an i would gladly pay it.
I don't know how many vehicles you've bought before. But, I'll tell you I haven't seen anything different in quality between my 07 JK and every other vehicle I've owned. That includes Chevy, Ford, Toyota, and Jeep products.

The issue is in the perspective. If you have a problem that is hard to fix like a leaky top and then maybe a few other issues then sure quality looks bad. That is just exascerbated by service departments that care even less than the level of training they received.

Except that movie critics ocassionally make good points. CR is never worth reading, imo. There's a guy at work who WILL NOT make a major purchase that goes against CR. Dipsh!t.

I have a WWII jeep, and I can tell you, from a car pot of vew: it is one of the worst car ever bult! the buld quality is great, and the reliabulty it outstanding, but it dos not do anyting good outher the get you from A to B no matter what is in the way! it is very slow (top out at 45 on road and in sand 3 MPH!!!) it is hot in the summer and dos not have a heater or door in the winter. it gos 0-40mph in about 0:45 sec. it is the most uncomterbull car I have ever been in. the list gos on and on why it is a bad car to drive to work or the store, but it is the most fun truck I have every been in! if CR rated my WWII jeep they would give it a -100! but they can keep all there "nice" car and I will drive my jeep with no doors, ruff or windsheld in the rain when it is 35F out side!

wow....you said it. so, he thinks some people at a magazine know what he likes better than he does......interesting.

i would look at a magazine like that and take their opinion into consideration, but i sure as hell wouldn't make vehicle purchases based solely on ANY magazine..........especially one that is grading dishwashers on the next page.

If you are passionate about vehicles and get a Camry/Sienna/Civic/CRV etc. etc. will you trade it in within 2 years and be happy you did? --> YES!

Is Jeep Wrangler made with some of the poorest materials available with very little thought to ergonomics and long-term reliability/durability? Basically a piece of crap? --> YES! Unfortunately, YES!

Is Jeep Wrangler a fun vehicle to own? --> YES! Take the top off, take the doors off, drive to the beach, drive in the snow, it looks great!

Is the JK practical? --> YES! It is cheap to buy, comes with LIFETIME power train warranty, seats 5, is a convertible in the summer and a 4WD in the winter. It gives a very acceptable ride in town and on the highway with very reasonable gas mileage.

Posts like this keep coming and coming -- I wish my above summary be considered the "Gold Standard" and we move on to other topics!
I agree with you EXCEPT for your denigration of the JK build quality, and your compliment about its gas mileage... mine isn't built poorly, and has had no real troubles. However, mine does (like all Wrangler before it) get poor gas mileage. I don't consider 17 MPG "very reasonable," but nor do I consider it very poor... it's somewhere in-between (i.e., "acceptable"). Just my $.02.

Consumer Reports isn't run by the same people it was once run by. Unbiased people who want to help. No offence but the Green Party has locked them in.

Look at Moter Trend for solid reviews.

CR has always had it in for Jeeps.

They bashed the devil out of my GC when I purchased it.
Well I put 250,000 miles on it and sold it in a day when put up for sale.

CR loves Toyota.
Oh how dependable they are just like their ads. blah blah blah
Well I got one with a v6 from my 85 year old aunt as she could not drive anymore. only 14k miles on it. Couple days later it is -15 and the wife goes to kick it over for getting to work. Snaps the oil pump shaft which took out the motor in short order. I have had the jeep in -40 without a problem.

Be glad CR does not like the JK. Else all the soccer moms/tools who believe those hacks and are driving those much praised Highlanders will switch, driving up the demand and prices for the rest of us.

I've been reading car magazines for about 13 years now. I have had subscriptions to countless different ones. Personally, I think they're all skewed. Motor Trend is one of the worst, in my opinion. Car and driver usually was pretty fair, though.

Then again, what good is a magazine article anyways? The only one that really has value is teh 10 best award, where cars and trucks are reviewed by several people. that helps with any bias. Also, long term tests are helpful, since they give you the point of view from several drivers who have used the things in teh real world over some time.

Other than that, you're getting 1 mans opinion of a vehicle supplied by a manufacturer (who knows if it's the same thing we'll see on the lot... I'm sure they take a little extra precautions if it's going under the "Microscope"). They probably have it all of 1 hour, along with a few free t-shirts, some nice coffee and a wonderful cheese display and fondue fountain.

If you're about to buy a vehicle, find a forum. You'll find all of the quibbles and complaints. You' can certainly join that forum and ask to hear about the good things about the vehicle too. It's real owners. Real world. Unbiased (unless it's a wrangler forum... haha)

this consumer reports rag used to send me free issues and offers, but after reading their reviews of anything AMERICAN BEING TERRIBLE I decided to rate that d*****d rag a 17 out of 100. I couldn't possibly have this b/s rag in my house unless I needed it to assist me with NUMBER 7 ON THE STOOL CHART.....
