Default Cracked Block, New Engine Dilemma

07 jk, 140k miles, rust on all 6 spark plugs, compression in the 150-280 psi, blowing water, pressure building in coolant system with each crank, rusted and awful looking heads once spark plugs are removed, inherited the “fix-a-flat” copper flaked residue from previous owner, after compression test, it’s spewing white, sweet-smelling smoke known so well. The band-aid has been removed, 3 months into being a jeep owner, a lifetime of wishing for a jeep.

Now that the sad tale is over, I need help with wisdom.

I’m not incompetent with my tools and know-how, but just don’t know how much to bight off…

New engines are my current focus, maybe with a new trans thrown in to sweeten the resale value. I paid 7300 for the jk, I’ve spent 5500 in repairs and a new top. What engine should put back into it/should I cut my losses?

I’m also a workaholic who has 2 kids and a very kind wife who gently reminds me to be home before 8 pm…

How do you know it's a cracked block? Maybe a blown head gasket instead?

I would believe it is a warped head(s) - from your description - but the compression values you have quoted (150-280psi) don't seem to prove that out. I had no idea the compression on a 3.8L would be 280psi, that seems really high?

Probably coolant in the cylinder(s) causing high pressure. Spec is minimum 100 psi and 25% variance. Mine was ~140.

Well, I now I know for sure… under the exhaust manifold on the driver’s side, hissing and sucking, along with a fissure which is noticiable by touch. (Can’t see it, but can feel it)

I’m feeling pretty beat up atm… 5500 in new parts, paid 7300 for it, now needs a non-trivial amount of work. I think I’ll have to cut my losses and re-enter the jeep world when finances are amenable for toys with that price-tag…

Hope things go better from here, best of luck going forward.

Have you looked around at junk yards for a replacement. The ones around here will even pull the old one and install the replacement.
