Default This crazy thing happened

So I wake up to take my kid sister to school today... We're sitting in the drop off line and she notices a crack in my windshield. It had been there for a few weeks and I was just waiting til it got big enough for the dealer to replace. While we are waiting the crack starts growing. My car is stopped completely and the two of us are just sitting in amazement as a 3" crack grows until it stretches across the entire windshield. Looks like I'll be getting a new windshield sooner than I thought.

Mine did the same thing. Started in the passenger bottom corner. Came up about 6 inches then went straight across the windshield and into the drivers side bottom corner... I figure at least mine is straight and symmetrical.

Maybe not sooner. From what I hear, they are backordered until June.

I can drive with mine, that's all I care about until it's replaced. I figured out why it happened tho, it snowed here in CO last night and some ice got in the original crack. I ran the heater and it expanded the water until it opened the crack up more. At least that's what makes sense to me. I could be wrong

Default Windshield crack?

Water actually expands when it freezes, so heating it enough to melt would not cause it to expand.

Lol, the crack expanded because glass expands and contracts due to temperature. So once you get the crack a fast change in temperature will cause the windshield to expand/contract. Mine started small and being in Texas the temperature swings 50 degrees some days. So it slowly got longer from day to day as the temp changed. You basically changed the temp extremely quickly trying to get rid of the snow. You only sped up the process of what was going to happen over time anyway.
