Nobody seems to get it.
But What-ever...

Before the JK, The Wrangler was only bought by 4x4 enthusiasts and adventurists,
Im just fearing that this will change and EVERYONE will have a Wrangler, making them less special than they are and then ruining the Jeep nameplate,

Exactly what the Patriot, Compass and Commander are doing.

Ooh!

60 4x4's
1 2x4

Hopefully, The Jk will not be the Next Explorer or Hummer H2/H3

Jeep quality is what made the Jeep name. Not the whether it's 2 or 4 wd.

Remember that the jeep was originally a military vehicle. Then civilians demanded that they should have acceess to them. It was meant as a G eneral P urpose vehicle (Hence the name GP or "Jeep"). When you say that Jeeps should be used for what they were meant for, you are saying that you would like it to remain as a military vehicle only and that it should be used for general purposes.

Same thing can be said about Hummers (to some extent).

FR - I get your point, I just disagree. Before the JK the Wrangler was not just bought by 4x4 enthusiasts and adventurists. It was bought by all kinds of people many of which didn't want or need 4x4. And it was not bought by some people because it was only offered in 4 wheel drive (these people probably bought a more practical 2WD SUV with a sunroof or a 4-seat convertible).

And as for everyone having a Wrangler - this is exactly what Jeep is trying to achieve! You may want to preserve a small, exclusive club of Wranglers, but Jeep wants to sell one to everyone. In my opinion, Jeep's plan of diversification works best with the 2WD Wrangler (and not so well with the Compass, Patriot, and Commander - but that's another discussion) because it actually fills a gap in the marketplace and will therefore sell well IMHO. I think the 2WD JK will help keep the company profitable, which is good for all Jeep enthusiasts.

Anyways, where's the beating the dead horse icon? FR - I see where you're coming from and a lot of Jeep purists agree with you. If you're right and no one buys the 2WD Wrangler you can bet Jeep will cancel it as an option quickly. Only time will tell. In the mean time the only person's opinion that matters is the one that pays their hard earned cash for the Jeep that they want/need for their own personal reasons.

And for the guy with the 4 daughters -

It's actually a pretty sizable difference - up to 3 mpg better for a manual trans model on the highway. Here are the EPA numbers:

Manual trans:

2WD JK
18 city, 22 hwy

4WD JK
17 city, 19 hwy

Auto trans:

2WD JK
17 city, 21 hwy

4WD JK
16 city, 19 hwy

if you get what you want instead of following the norm; chances are you will always make yourself happy with your descision even though it may baffle others. when i decided to purchase a motorcyle everybody was telling me that i was stupid to not buy a suzuki instead of a harley davidson and that an 800cc bike was too small. i have had the bike for about a year and a half and have no plans getting anything larger. it was one of the best decisions i have made.

My 1995 Tahoe disconnects the front hubs and transfer case...

I don't think a 4x2 Tahoe would get that much better milage..

So why's it affect a lil jeep so much?

Ohh yea... the minivan motor....

that, and you can't put a price on pulling a lever, and WHAM going through 6" of fresh snow like it's not even there!
