Do bug shields really work?
most folks have reported that they "supercharge" or "turbocharge" the bugs into your windshield
they might work at interstate speeds... but probably not around town... like where all the bugs are

Years ago my husband had a bug shield on a Nissan pickup. It didn't seem to prevent bugs from hitting the windshield, and I can tell you that it caused us a major problem. We didn't realize that the bug shield fit too closely to the hood, and it allowed water and condensation to collect between the hood and bug guard. We parked the truck outside (no garage at the time). After the bug shield was on there for a while (maybe a year or two), I decided to take it off to clean under it. To my amazement, the hood had two totally rusty strips about 12" x 2". I had to sand down the areas and repaint them. Because of this, I won't even consider a bug shield. If you do get one, make sure it doesn't sit to close to the hood.
no.
i removed the one on my ZJ.... no change in the amount of bug innards cast upon the windshield.
I put one on the wife's Tahoe for two reasons... looks and to prevent paint chips from rock and such.
