Default Do I have a defective directional switch?

When using the directional turn signal sometimes it does wierd stuff. sometimes it tends to move forward and then I cannot get it to turn off. It gets in a mode that either the left side wants to blink or the right side wants to blink, This happened the other day when my friend was driving on the highway. He was going beserk trying to turn it off, then the other day it happened to me. I usually just hit it lightly to get the three blinks but sometimes I need to leave it on for a while, but forever? Anyone else have a quirky directional?

Thats what it's supposed to do. So when on the highway you just bump it to get over and it automatically goes off after 3 blinks.
So no you are not going crazy.

1. Are you saying it will start to blink one way or the other, and keep blinking beyond the 3 flash lane change feature?

2. Does this happen only when you cancel the blinker by hand?

3. When this happens, is the stalk in the off position, or is it in one of the directional positions?

I'm not much of a blinker user kind of guy....so I use the light touch to get the three blinks. I am well aware of this function.

I'm talking about being on the highway and putting it on all the way so it blinks indefinetly, until turning the wheel shuts it off. Well...if you do not turn the wheel enuf then you have to turn it off manually with your hand. This is when I've had it go crazy and it would keep blinging but on the other direction....then moving it back to the other side it would blink still but on the other direction.....in other words it would not center out and stop blinking. This has happened with myself driving and my buddy driving.

1. If I tap it slightly it will blink the 3 times as designed. That function works ok.

2. Yes, I believe so.

3. I'm guessing that it is in one of the directioal positions. It seems like it is impossible to find the center (neutral) position. When putting the blinker on (not just tapping it for the 3 blinks) sometimes the handle wants to go forward also which is wierd. There might be a certain position that this happens, and I can study it closer, but ...

my question is ....does anyone else have a problem like this? I'm friggin 59 years young and have a few years experience driving vehicles over the years, and can tell you something is not right. I'm sure I can spend some time trying to figure out when this happens and maybe get Crysler to replace it but I try to stay as far away from the dealer as possible.

When I make a left turn it only turns off maybe half of the time, when I turn right it is fine. I just got used to manually turning it off.

The only thing I can think of is the neutral detent is not strong enough, and when you cancel by hand it snaps past neutral and goes into the opposite "blink" position.
Go to the dealer (or a friend's JK) and try the blinker stalk to compare the force to take it out of the neutral detent into the left and right blinker positions.

Exactly...I noticed that when I first got the Jeep, the blinker stalk thing was very stiff and I would often overcorrect trying to turn it off and thus make it do the 3 auto blink to the other side. After some use though it has gotten much better and I have gotten better at turning the blinker off.

This has happened to me on a few random occaisions. Since it seemed like the stalk was going nuts, I just started twisting stuff such as the dome light control. Once i turned the dome light on & off real quick, the turn signal freak show ended and everything stayed off. I know this doesn't fix the source of the problem, but I have used the dome light switch to fix the crazy blinker on multiple instances so it's just become second nature and i don't even stress over it. It's a jeep thing.
