Seeing as my wife has had two minivans, both with the 3.8, I can assure you it's a damn good engine. The 3.8 has never failed us nor given us one problem whatsoever. People need to get over the hangup of the 3.8 being a mini van engine. Had their been hemi's in the mini van and JK no one would have blinked an eye.

gah whats the big deal, its an upgraded engine. the 4.0 was OLD technology. Just like back in the 50's 60's and 70's Chevy went from the 265 to the 283 to a 327 and 350 and so forth. There's no sense in not upgrading.

We heard this same complaint when the 258 (or 4.2) was killed for the 4.0 back in the CJ to YJ days.

I just wish they would stick a V8 back in the Jeeps. I miss my old 304 in my CJ that thing was wicked and got close to the same mileage as this V6...

Hey, Marine, you effed up. The Coronet was a Dodge, not a Plymouth, I know because I ha one, a '68 R/T with a 440. Seriously bad ass car. I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make?

nam6869usmc.. you might chill out, I realize you are defending the JK, which is great and all, but the original question was a simple one? Is this engine from a minivan? the answer is yes... its that simple, no one was bashing the JK..

Most here realize that engines are useful in more than one vehicle, and the JK is a new use for this engine,

which IMHO this engine is nothing to write home about....

In regards to the reliability, I can't comment on, although here, numerous members have experienced overheating and spurratic stalling along with a few other problems.
Technically it is dissapointing.. it is an old push rod design, 12 valves, no type of variable valve timing or even dual over head cams.. and the performance illustrates the technology.

I'm sure people here will bash me for complaining about the JK engine, which is fine, I am a huge fan of Wranglers, and many other Jeeps in general, but the JK engine isn't up to par compared to similar powerplants from Toyota or Nissan. I consider myself a Jeep fan, but we can have a better Jeep if the powerlant is more powerful, smoother, and more efficient. I don't unerstand the mentallity of "treason" if you have an issue with a part of a vehicle you like.

The engine is quick enough for most, powerfull enough to off road for 99% of us, and it is probably smooth enough, and reliable enough for a wrangler, I just feel that the powertrain IS the weakest link for the JK.

What I would really be happy with...
Example.. Nissan Xterra.. 261HP, 281Torque 4.0L V-6. also (5speed auto) DOHC
24 Valve
Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS)
Variable Intake System
Micropolished Crankshaft

That said, I still love my Jeep.

Bottom ____________.....as long as it responds to my needs I don't care if the last vehicle the 3.8 engine was installed was a Gremlin..... , I hope I don't have to swap it with a VTEC before my last payment is made...
