I mostly purchased a Rubicon was all around out of the box you can tackle most any trail or go places pretty reasonable out of the box.
My friend recently returned from afghan and I helped him setup his current jeep.
2005 Rubicon we installed a basic Budget Boost and a set of 33's with rims.
He goes most everywhere I go with 35's.

I am glad I did not go with a Rubi. The only item that comes on a Rubi that I wish I had, and I probably wont upgrade to, is the trasher case. $10k for a t-case? No thanks.

Tranfer case, lockers, 4:10 gears, and lockers, would be nice out of the box. But I'm happy with my x. Plus money for the house makes the wifey more happy. So is life

Nope. No regrets. Couldn't afford a Rubi anyway.
When my factory tires wear out, I hope to re-gear to 4.10 and get 31" - 33" " tires.
If I ever blow my transfer case it'll get replaced with a Rubi or a Terra Low or an Atlas. Doubt that'll ever happen though.
Couple of grand for re-gear - grand and a half for transfer case. That's pretty close to a Rubi for only $3,500.

I love my Rubicon. The difference in cost for me was $100 a month. SO Sport Unlimited with crank windows and a hard top or a fully loaded Rubicon.. There was no looking back. It was worth it because I knew that coming up with the thousands to upgrade to lockers or a front D44 OR the $$$$ to rid myself of the car tires it came with and put decent rubber on would be much more difficult then $100 a month. I have a capable Jeep off the show room floor and I can upgrade as the money becomes available.

The real way to think of it is "do you get a Rubicon or a 2wd x." If you plan to throw Dana 60's, Atlas transfer case, 37-40" tires, and a 6" long arm, then go with a 2wd so you save money since you are just keeping the chassis and interior. Used is even better.
If you want a Jeep that is unstopable on 99% of the trails right out of the box, then get the Rubi. I did the same thing when I was in Iraq and two years later I cannot be happier. The D44's, lockers, transfer case, etc. are all things that your would want if you bought a sport or sahara and the cost difference is much less than installing the parts afterwards. If you are not a fabricator or cannot afford to drop it off at a shop with your credit card, a Rubi is the way to go.
Even with a stock Rubi I've found that I had one of the better set up rigs on the runs. With a just a 3" lift and 34's it is a beast that has done every tough trail (including John Bull) in Big Bear.

The only reason I even looked at the Rubi. I knew I was going to replace everything Jeep charged a premium for, so why waste the extra 8K to 10K? I can get a new D44 for much less, plus not have to throw away things like the electric lockers and electric disco. If I ever move back home (or somewhere hilly) I can always swap an Atlas TC or a stock Rubi one in if needed and still be better off.
