Is driver training worth it??
Being new to the JK world... and wanting to get some practical knowledge and experience quickly.. and also not wanting to make the typical bonehead mistakes... I am looking for ways to learn. This site is A-1 grade info for sure. I have also noticed a few people offering "driver training".
Has anyone gone this route? Any thoughts on the value of such training? Prices are in the $150-200/day with more than half the time being behind the wheel of your own vehicle. (I searched a while on this issue, and found nothing... not sure if its there and I can't find it.)

I am a Jeep off-road driving instructor and all I can say is do it. I train approximately 20 to 30 new Jeep owners a mouth. A good instructor should give you more confidence on how to use your Jeep off-road . You don't what to try to experiment with new tactics off-road in your new rig.

I would recommend looking to join a local Jeep club. You'll find that most of the members are very seasoned and will be more than happy to teach you if you just ask.
I only recommend this because it is what I did about 2 months back and I've learned so much. Every time we go out I ask questions and have other members help me pick lines and give me advice in real time. Its been a great learning experience and I've made alot of friends.
Also its generally free

My department sent me to their 4X4 school a long time ago and, if for nothing else, it will show you just what your vehicle is capable of. Classes also show you the safe way to navigate across obstacles and winching techniques. I would think that it would be a fun class and you may meet some new friends.
I didn't know the first thing about off-roading until I got the jeep and went off-road with people from this forum. I have learned so much just from going out and asking questions, watching others and just doing it myself in the environment...and I didn't have to pay for it.

I just saw you list of Jeep addon's.
I believe in instruction in all aspects in high performance driving wether it be on a road racing track or off road.
I am involved in lots of track days and club racing and even the seasoned track drivers have a coach.
I for one would love to have the time to take an off road driving course. I just spend too much time on easy trails and most of my time on the race track.
If you off road and want to look good, be safe and learn a lot, get professional instruction. Get good referances and go for it.

I come from a motorcycling background, and I can't say enough good stuff about driver (rider) education. I try to take some kind of class every couple of years. Keeps me sharp and I never fail to learn something new.
And with motorcycles, I get an insurance break for taking classes!

I'm all for any kind of training in the Jeep. As for getting an insurance discount........I'm not sure your insurance company would like to hear that you are taking a course on how to drive off road.
Maybe your rates will go up!

No training required. Hook up with a group from the board, Wayoflife has runs every month for newbies, and learn that way. Toad is a prime example. She and her hubbie learned on local socal runs with this forum.
