Default Engine Break-In

Hey everyone,

New to the forum and to owning a Jeep. I am also new to buying a new car. Anyway, I'm picking up my new JK tonight (extremelly excited), and the dealership is over an hour away from me. It's pretty much all highway to get there. Seeing as I put the first 5 miles on the jeep during the test drive, does anybody have any recomendations for the ride home. I don't wanna cause any damage to the new engine by beating on it too hard. Should I keep it under 50 or something like that maybe? Any advice is appreciated.

Colin

Heck, RubyDoo had an over 3 hour drive home from Beaverton, OR. to Everett, WA. It was about 200+ miles home and doing between 60 and 70 the whole way. The computer learns how you drive during the first 5000 miles. I would say a steady pace would be best. RubyDoo has been fine so far with 11,800 miles on her.

What? There's Program in the compute that stops collecting data after 5000 miles? Thats fine if you live in a climat where it's sunny or just rains. I'll be at 5000 before the snow stops flying. I'll be at 2000 today, it's been a month and a week.

Anyone have a line on this program?

I may have to start writting assembler again!

Wicked. I was about to ask the exact same question. I'll be picking mine up as well. Same scenario! I'm debating between taking the highway home and setting it on cruise in the right hand lane, or taking the back roads home.

Thumbs up Nope

Don't give it a thought. Just drive within the law and there is not any problem.
Normal conditions will not be a problem.

Colin - FWIW I followed the Owners Manual recommendation.

From the Owners Manual:

ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS
A long break-in period is not required for the engine in your new vehicle.

Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable.

While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration, within the limits of local traffic laws, contributes to a good break-in. Wide open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental and should be avoided.

Good luck with your new Jeep!

We picked ours up and drove 6 hours home. Tried to vary the speeds a little.

Just another tip When breaking in an engine you do not want to use the cruise control. Variable engine speed and load is best. Now it should be easy since the manual only says 300 Miles for break-in.
