everyday cargo
i have a bin in the back of my jeep with a crap load of tools, air pump, ax, ropes, shackles, ect. i am guessing at least 200 pounds of stuff. how much stuff do you guys leave in your jeps for regular day to day driving? i want to take it out but i feel that as soon as i do i will break down on the way to work and need my tools. I like the assurance that i have everything i would need for a situation but i am sure it is killing my mileage.

But off- road, maybe you should keep the tools?
Ya......I used to leave all my tools in the Jeep too, but after I got the bigger tires I knew the mileage would go down a little just from that, so I pulled them out and started leaving them at the jobsite. All I have back there now is the stock jack and tow strap, and a couple light tools.
Every little bit helps I guess....

i think i am just going to leave the stock jack, jumper cables, and like someone else said just a few light tools. i guess i am just paranoid. this is the first new vehicle i have ever owned. i have been broken down on the side of the road many times by other older vehicles resulting in my current paranoia(however you spell that word).
i carry not a lot either tbh:
small screwdriver set/socket set in a box about the size of a VHS cassette box
digital camera
golf umbrella
hoody jacket
locking wheel nut keys for both sets on the Jeep
+stock oem jack/brace
and thats all i think
but im not bothered about the breaking down thing, as I got the Jeep Priviledge membership with total recovery wherever/whenever for the lifetime of the Jeep for free

i just went and removed the bin and the back end of jeep actually raised almost an inch. I have never taken the bin out before and i almost couldnt lift it out with it full. just going to take my chances.

Do you really need an axe on the way to work?
I have a recovery bag full of gear but daily I just carry a 4-way wrench and one of those "Emergency Roadside kits" with the basics: Tire repair and pump, flashlight, jumpers, and basic hand tools.

Aside from what came with the jeep (jack) I keep the torx set, phillips and flat screwdrivers, pliers, my small binocs, a spotlight, and my utility knife (a straight blade sheath knife). None of the tools are for the jeep specifically except the torx but rather because they are good handy tools to have anywhere. I also keep a small leatherman kick in my pocket (everywhere I go it goes).
Edit: I forgot I also carry my machette because you never know when I will find myself somewhere I want a fire especially in fall or winter and it will chop and split wood as good or better than an ax (real heavy bladed older one not the el-cheapos of today)
