My 2011 just rolled 100k and I'm looking to do a steering system refresh - many worn out parts. As I was looking this morning, I wanted to get some thoughts on the rust seen in these pics. Does this look like anything more than just normal rust on an almost 10yo mid-western dd? Or is this concerning? All of the troublesome spots on the frame seem fine from what I can tell.
For east Texas that wouldn't be normal, somebody from down close to the coast or goes to the beach occasionally it could be more common from the salt water, if they salt the roads in the winter where you live or you go to the beach I could see rust like that,

Yeah I'm just outside of Chicago. Salt all over the place in the winter months unfortunately.
Not sure how well it would work around the seals and gaskets, but I have used phosphoric acid as a rust remover/ primer on other metals, the loose rust turns white and powdery and the solid rust turns black and is paintable, just wire brush the white loose stuff and respray till it all turns black, then paint with a can of black Rust-Oleum
I had my underside sand-blasted and sealed. It looks really good, but what's going on inside boxed and closed areas? Most places I've asked won't do sand-blasting or ANY rust repair these days. If I were buying a NEW Jeep, I'd definitely get everything coated in some way. Many of the areas and part people post here asking about rust arre not at risk of rust through - nuts and bolts, cast iron parts, etc.
Although I live in Maine, this Jeep spent many winters away from the salt belt, and it has been flushed often. My only body rust the the right-rear corner has rusted away completely. I'm torn about having a full replacement of the areas affected.
