Front windshield
Hey guys and gals, I always have the top down and most of the time have the doors off (once I was shown how easy it was to take the doors off), but what about the front windshield?
1. How hard is it to put down?
2. How long does it take and what tools?
3. What do you think of it? Drive it on the Highway or is that a dumb question?
and last post pics please front side
Thanks Red

Heath,
Not a good plan to drive down the highway with the windshield down. I think it is illeagal in MO anyway. This is really a offroad only kind of deal.
Many don't realize that your front airbags actually work by using the windshield to provide support once they deploy.
Is damn nice out today
Cant blame you for thining about it.
Call me sometime.

After reading a few writeups here I decided it was harder than the manual suggests. One guy even broke a clip that holds the thing putting it back up. That said one day I will try it perhaps on the beach or something. As far as doing it on road I think everywhere it is only allowable offroad. I know it is not a good idea as the last rock that chipped my window would have been my face instead of the windshield and that was in the city. As far as tools t-40 same as the hardtop.
It's not all that hard to do, but it is a PITA. It is well worth it for a day of wheelin tho...
On the TJ you had to remove 8 bolts holding on the side bars, then one bolt on each side of the windshield frame. Not too shabby.
The JK is another story. 24 or 26 bolts total I think This includes a bolt for each windshild wiper (the TJ's wipers just came off with a quick release latch).
And as someone already said, you ain't drivin' it on the highway. Even if you tried you would stop before you got going too fast. Its like bein in a rollercoaster, only with little rocks and bugs flying at you...

Yeah.......just from what the manual says it looks like a real pain no doubt. Sure was easy on my old CJ.
And I do believe in most states (if not all) it is illegal to drive without a windshield....I could be wrong. But that actually got me thinking today (look out), if motorcycles can do it then why can't we? I know rocks and bugs could tear you up, but if we wanted to then why not? They probably think that it would be too easy to loose control of a 4k lb weapon rollin' down the road. Which is probably true......

So much for feeling the wind in your hair!
I had an hour to be somewhere a while back, so decided to lower my windshield before making the trip. Got out the manual and 40 minutes and a bajillion removed screws into the project realized I wasn't going to make it. As others have said, it is a royal pain in the rear. It's best to think of it this way: Lower it if you plan to use it that way for an extended period of time--weeks or months, not hours. Otherwise, just be happy that the JK retains this traditional Jeep feature and leave it up.
