Default GVWR - only 5,400

My JKU Rubi, loaded with every option but air bags, has a GVWR of 5,700 (not 5,400 as originally posted. oops) per the decal on the door jam. I have steel bumpers, winch, skids, and some tools.

On a scale with a full tank of gas, NO people on board and no luggage (ie, food and weekend bags), my JK weighs 5,000lbs even.

Just venting I guess. I will say this, when I upgrade wheels and tires, weight will be a factor!

ok, so I changed my mind. How do I delete this thread? doh!

Why are you concerned with it? Whens the last time a cop asked you to put your truck on a scale?

OK, lets look at it this way. The GVWR for a vehicle is decided by the automaker based on the stock braking system and weight capacity of the stock suspension. They look at the capabilities of these two things and decide what weight these can safely handle. Judging by the picture in your avatar your JK is anything but stock. Obviously the suspension is up to the task of the weight and I'm going to assume that when you put the 33s on (it looks like that's what you've got on it) that you have upgraded your brakes to be able to handle the extra mass of the tires. If you haven't you might want to consider it especially since the stock brakes suck at dealing with the 31s that come on it. So as long as you feel that the vehicle is safe to drive then you should't run into any issues legal or otherwise.

I would think being lifted would reduce the safety margin, especially at gross weight.

Most of what we all do to these things reduces the safety on the street. Once you start lifting them and putting bigger tires on you are raising the CG of the truck and it's going to roll easier. Also cutting the crash cans off and putting on solid steel bumpers is going to reduce the crash safety in terms of the vehicle absorbing the impact instead of you. However, he didn't sound like he felt the truck was unsafe just concerned that it was over the LEGAL limit.

I was concerned about safety, wear & tear, MPG, and everything else bad that comes with driving at max weight. Yes, I do all my wheeling trips with my kids so I'm always thinking safety.

I felt better when I realized my GVWR was actually 5700 not 5400 as I originally thought.

Oh, and I have stock Rubi 32's and stock brakes. the lift & other details are in my sig & profile.
