Hail damage, surprising results
Had a nice hail storm roll through about a week ago. Where I'm at we had up to golf ball size and about a mile or so south at my wife's office some were as big as baseballs. They estimated the wind at about 70 mph.
I had never actually seen hail that big before, it was pretty amazing. The noise was unbelievable and the damage is extensive.
Last year I posted about getting hit by a hail storm while I was driving. I was actually driving with the wind and hail coming directly at me at about 50 mph and I was going 30 - 35. We never even turned it into insurance, wasn't necessary. The windshield held up fine and it was days before I noticed the first dimple in the hood. There were only 3 or 4 and they were so slight you had to stand just right to see them.
This year we still did surprisingly well, but not quite as good as last year.
The Jeep was parked at my wife's office when it hit. When she left the office the cars on either side of her had broken front windshield and broken driver side windows.
Once again the Jeeps windows were completely intact.
The body didn't hold up quite so well. A couple of very deep dimples on the hood and driver side doors. One on the hood was enough to cause the paint to crack and chip, and another along the top of the windshield frame also chipped.
Got the appraisal done today, $2,900 with only 16 points of impact. I've seen cars that look like golf balls they have so many dimples.
The dents are deep enough they won't do paintless dent repair. They are replacing the hood, the cowling below the windshield and both doors on the drivers side. The windshield will have to be pulled out so they can repair the frame.
I'm proud of the Jeep, once again held up better than those around us.
Hmm, maybe I should tell them I'll keep the doors and they can pay for two half doors.

Edit: After looking at the doors again I started to question the adjusters comment that they would replace the doors. I believe what he meant was they would have to pound them out and paint, rather than paintless dent repair. I double checked the estimate they gave me and sure enough there are hours for painting but not replacing the doors.

+1 for the AEV hood........Hail damage is how I got mine as well. It cost me an extra $300 out of my pocket, but it was well worth it
