I'm more impressed with this than anything and wanted to post it. My buddy drove his Jeep over to my house yesterday. It's an '04 and has 241k miles on it. Of course the clutch has been replaced among other things that normally need replacing. But I was just thinking- I suppose as long as you upkeep maintenance then how long could it last? Forever?

That looks more like a '94. They stopped making the XJ in '01. With regular maintenence, you should be able to get 250K out of them without issue. 300K is not impossible either. More than that would depend on other factors. The bright side is 4.0L engines are relatively cheap and the transmissions are plentiful too.

I have friends that will only run XJ's. Reasons: Engine is dirt cheap. Parts to lift it are dirt cheap. You can buy one for $1000-$2000.

I was tempted to buy one also, but it's not the best daily driver. Hence the reason why I went with a JK.

I know plenty of ppl running XJs with 200k+ on their motors. I know plenty of ppl running tjs and YJs with the 4.0 and they are at 150k with no issues showing any signs of the motor going. It is a sluggish motor but a very reliable one. But we can't say anything about being sluggish with us guys running a 3.8 cuz let's be honest nothing good can come out of a mini van.

thats bs i have a 2003 grand caravan with now over 180k that has been drivin mostly city /town stop and go its whole life , it has a 3.3 which is essentially the same engine , all i heard was the trans was crap the engine was crap blah blah blah , admittedly it hasnt been wheeled but i think its usage would be considered hard , all ive done is replace a fuel pump , water pump intake gasket and other minor things . the supposedly crap trans has probably shifted a million times with no problems other than needing a shift module (external , easy 100 dollar fix ) so i would say these are pretty good engines

I put 250k on a 94 xj. It did get a jasper engine at 200 k. The uni body really wears out after that. The body where the front door hinges broke rubber bushings for all control arms, leaf springs. It really rattled down the road. I sold it to a 16 year old kid in 07 and I still see it on the road.

I had a 93 ZJ. Beat the living hell out of it. When I stopped driving it, I left it in the driveway at my mom's house. It had 328k on the motor.

It sat for years, with no care. About 2 years ago, I finally decided to get rid of it. Tires had dry rotted, and rust ate most of the body, but pulled it up on the tow truck and hooked it up to a jumper box for shits and giggles. Started right up. I miss the 4.0L.
