My feeling has always been that with an under powered engine you work it more which in turn burns more gas. With a Hemi in a JK in manual form anyways you could lug it around in 6th gear more because you have all that torque to work with and there for get the same if not maybe better mileage than with a V6.
In the old days yes, you are right. But with all the new Bio Diesel technology adding usualy 7,000 to 11,000 dollars to the vehicles sticker price alone, and the cost of todays' diesel at the station, it is really not worth it. Plus with the new technology with the DPF filters and their issues alone, will drive you crazy. Just not worth it, a lot has changed with the entire diesel world, not the same beast you can work on your self , like the old days.
I was a diesel dude myself, I just had enough of the new emission's crap, constantly breaking down. If that is not enough diesels do not get anywhere near what they use to get compared to 7 years or more ago. Those were the days a diesel engine was worth every penny. Now Ford requires to use Urea in the seperate tank next to the gas tank, to be able to pass emissions,,, Seriously, it is getting to be a bit too much with this emission Bull ...it is all a big money maker. If you start to delete the DPF Filters and other stuff that goes along with it, you will have serious issues with any warranty claims , way worse than what we go through with our JK's.
I Personaly feel the Hemi with the displacement system would be the best bet, The HEMI Engine has been around and proven itself for the long term, which is important , than developing another new engine that has no history, which is taking chances of having fututre issues like Ford's new Diesel Engine in their SUPER DUTY Pickups, constant issue , day to day in the shop They would need to install a bypass system with a switch for those times when you want the full hemi power, thus shutting off the displacement engine feature, like the Challenger, no displacement at all in that sports car.
