There is a mod for this in the write up section.
It's not perfect but it works.

I'll do the write up soon and post a link to it.
Any ideas on how hard it would be to convert the tailgate to a lift gate, I was frustrated when I had my TJ and now with my JK it's just as bad. I was hauling some lumber, If I were able to lay the gate down like a truck, I could have room to put the boards, Instead of having them coming out the back on opposite sides of the brake light. Having to flex the lattice upward without cracking it. I was considering modifying it to a lift, I think it's useless as a side open gate. Has anyone looked into this, why it's done this way. Besides the weight of the tire.

Thanks in advance.

On a semi-related topic, on a recent tour of Europe in the JK, my g/f and I were sleeping in the back of the JK, and thought it would be ideal to be able to open the tailgate from the insie rather than messing around clambering in and out throught the rear side doors!

granted we werent affected safety wise, but i do totally agree with the need

I wonder....more and more jurisdictions are mandating trunk releases as standard safety equipment....might end up in a redesign somewhere down the line, and not by manufacturer's choice.
