Sorry I'm with the skeptics. My 11' JKUR stock averages 13 mpg mostly city. The best the indicator ever shows is maybe 18 mpg at a steady 65 mph on the highway on level ground. Throw in any sort of hills or any faster than 65 and the mpgs will be lower than 18. I'm not driving with a lead foot. I understand the 12's and later will get better mpgs but I'm skeptical that any JK with any larger tires will honestly get in the 20's. You guys do remember that the indicator is off when you change your tire size?

When my 09 was stock it was 16mpg

After teraflex 2.5 lift it got 14.5-15

With lift and delta skybar and 2 windshield pillar ipf 968 lights, and 2 more on newly installed aev bumper i got 13.5-14.

Im a believer in collecting data. Lol.

I stopped driving it may2013 and dismantled my jeep for a massive overhaul -lift, v8 and 40" tires. It is still in pieces today. I tend to procrastinate.

I actually took everything off the 2dr '08 and the only thing left was a small lift and 33"s, drove it to the dealer for a trade in a few hours away and was getting 17.8 MPG. Normally I would be about 12-13MPG depending on the wind directions...

On my 4dr '12 with 35's I'm getting about 13MPG again... It was pretty awesome seeing the opposite numbers for a change.

This isn't the first time this has been asked, and I'm sure you're not surprised by that. And these threads always seem to devolve down into a bunch of meaningless MPG numbers with a number of outliers. The numbers are meaningless because the reader has no idea of any of the following (unless the poster has been so kind as to provide that info):
  • How was the number derived--computer reading or actual hand calculation?
  • Is the speedometer accurate (if off, so is the odometer)?
  • What kind of gas was used?
  • What was the mix of city/highway driving?
  • Was the highway driving crowded city or unimpeded traffic flow?
  • What highway speeds were being driven (65 MPH instead of 75 MPH will net 2-3 MPG improvement)?
  • What are typical weather conditions, most especially wind?
  • What are typical terrain conditions, most especially hills?
  • At what altitude were most trips (the JK gets about 2-3 MPG higher up--Coloradans should be smiling at that)?
  • What mods are on your Jeep that might affect gas mileage?

To answer your question, I've seen my mileage drop to as little as 9.5 MPG. That is an accurate number, hand calculated on a calibrated speedometer with GPS confirming the calibration. Gas used is the cheapest I can find. Recently, always 87 octane even at higher altitude where 85 and 86 is sold as regular (too much problem with lower gas mileage and pinging from the lower grade gas--replicated by other folks I travel with, BTW, who also arrived at the same conclusion). Typically, I get about 12.5 MPG for my weekly fill-ups. Driving is mostly city streets--90-100%. Highway on trips, of which I take many each year (146K miles on my Jeep), I get about 14-15. Most trips have some very windy days, and some not so windy days. Most trips are in the southwest, so plenty of long uphills and downhills. The best mileage I've seen was 18. That was really a fluke--tail wind headed down that long stretch of I-40 east of Albuquerque. I do see 16.5 MPG on occasion, and if someone were to put my Jeep in test conditions--optimal road with no hills and no wind, I'd say expect 16-17 MPG. Typically, on the Interstates I drive 65 for most of the trip. Just for the record, the Jeep computer shows my MPG usually within about a 0.5 MPG of accuracy--typically higher than it really was.

Now, I have a ton of mods. I'm very heavy, and when traveling on expeditions, I'm ridiculously heavy, sometimes with really big boxes strapped on top of the Jeep (though I've done some mods to get most of that stuff inside the Jeep). I run 35s on 4.88 gears on my 2007 with a six speed. Going up some of those hills sometimes means I'm in fourth gear until I get to the top. Not the best for gas mileage. I often have the hardtop on with the overhead rack and lights and basket. I may as well put a big sail up there, LOL. Other times, I have a safari top and am traveling light--even cross country. I guess what I'm trying to say is if my Jeep can be all over the map as to configuration and gas mileage, how can you expect an answer to your question that provides anyone any useful info?

I get that. But 29? And higher? Still calling BS. 26, maybe stock. But not much more than that.....

Oh, and opinions agent wrong. That's why it's called an opinion. Newbs........ LOL!!!

Now that's out of the way, back to realistic posts.......

Why would I lie about the figures?
I only answered the posts question.

I Took the pic last week because that was my best mpg.

My jeep 09 2.8 crd model is not as economical as the newer diesel models after 2011,
Which do more to the gallon due to the different automatic gearbox.

Mine's a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited. No mods...yet. I drive about 50/50 city/highway and I drive out to horse country once or twice a week. I use cheap gas. Sent from my iPhone using JK-Forum
