Default Jeepland Security - hard or soft tops?

So if all goes well I will be finally getting my jeep in about 2-3 weeks. Going to special order it online from jeep warehouse to save a few and get exactly what I want. Now what exactly do I want?

I know I want the mygig radio. I thought of the standard radio and going aftermarket for another one but I worry about theft. I know Jeeps are easy to get into, so are mygigs generally a big target? like, will a car stereo stealing brat look in the window and just see the touch screen and grab the radio anyway not thinking "golly, it's just a factory radio!". Are soft tops generally less "secure" than hard tops? I really love the look of half doors, which would mean soft only. But i would rather have the piece of mind knowing there's even a slightly less chance of someone breaking into my jeep, so if that means getting a hard top, I'd gladly do so. So, what do you folks think? for security purposes as little as they may be, am I better with hard or soft tops? Or in the end will it not matter and they'll both really be just as easy?

Why not get the dual top group? You would have the full doors automaticaly with this combo (I think), but atleast you can enjoy both hard and soft top.

Well, hard tops are harder to get through then soft-tops, but you will hate hardtop in summer time, when you will want to go to the beach. lol

I say get both tops

Heading to Galveston this weekend (Galvetraz is the nickname), and will keep the hard top on until I get back to Big D. But this is primarily because I won't have time to remove the top once I get it back from Screamin Lizard.

When I was in school down there, I had a car broken into (had nothing to take, just a pain in the ass to clean up the glass), and my room mates each had their cars broken into several times. I am thinking i would have LESS hassle by having the soft top, keeping it unlocked with NOTHING of value in the Jeep.

I will be installing a Tuffy box or 2 in the near future.

But realizing that I have a MyGig, and all these new add ons, I don't want the vehicle stolen either. I'll be parking it in the backyard of my brother's house (too tall for the garage) at night, and under lights in busy areas otherwise.

This is a tuff question for me as well as a new Jeep owner.

I hope none of us ever has to deal with this, but in today's world,.....

Dual tops was my original plan, I was gonna do hard tops in the winter and soft or none in the summer.. but I'm going to be moving to a kind of small townhouse soon, and I just don't think I'll have the space to store the other top that I'm not using. And also since it will be in a townhome community, even though it's a kinda nice area, there will be a whole lot of cars all lined up in a row for neighborhood brats to be mischevious with.. so I'm just hoping to lessen the chance of mine getting chosen

I thought of going with the standard radio and getting a handheld kind of GPS attachment, but I know I will be lazy and leave it in the jeep from time to time, so I think that would be an even bigger risk than the built in mygig. As far as leaving other stuff in the jeep I would probably get one of those Tuffy thingies, but not right off the bat...

I got the hard top only for security reasons and for the fact that we too are in a townhome with not much storage space. Anytime the weather is nice, I take off the front Freedom panels. Had the full top off 3 times this past summer.

hey necross I would suggest searching for a jeep there are SO many in stock now its crazy...some dealers here in nj have 40+

and for all you talking about the Tuffy products, I just installed the security drawer in mine and damn this thing is built TUFF, weighs in at a healthy 116lbs. I'm quite impressed and was very easy to install, complete bolt in.

this site is a great search tool for jeeps

edit......what model and other options you looking at getting? another option you could buy one without the mygig if you cant find one with and then just buy the mygig after, have seen a cpl for sale on here and ebay and from what I've read its an easy install....most of the ones in stock with mygigs are fully loaded

Why to people believe it is more difficult or takes longer to access the interior of a soft top vs. a hardtop? It takes a mere second to pop out the side window with a tethered steel ball and a skilled thief can do it while walking casually by and not even break their stride. If the alarm does not sound, they either then return on a second pass to access the vehicle or leave it for an accomplice to access. If the alarm does go off, they will often wait at a distance to see if anyone responds and let the alarm timeout and reset. After that, they scout and go for access.

I’m not saying a soft top is better as it likely attracts the non-skilled thieves who may believe they’ve found an easy target but I really don’t think the odds are much different either way. It is more important to have what at least “appears” to be a security system, nothing to lead anyone to believe that there are valuables in the vehicle and park in areas that are highly visible.

I have the soft top w/ half doors. I live in the LA area and keep the top off most the time, it is actually stored in the garage more often than not. The MyGIG is still in the dash and I don't worry at all about it. If it was stolen it would be a small hassle to deal with the insurance and replace it.

Get the Jeep you want, enjoy it as much as you can and don't worry about the small things.
