JK is the name for all Jeep wranglers made from 2007-Current date
The Jeep model before that was known as a TJ, Then YJ (with square headlights)

edit:
Each Wrangler model has received a designation in addition to the nameplate Wrangler corresponding to their generation: YJ (1987–1995), TJ (1997–2006), LJ's (2004–2006 Unlimited models) and JK (2007–present).

Jeep makes a JK a JK. JK is Jeep's model designation for this series of Jeep Wranglers.

CJ stood for 'civilian jeep'
TJ is rumored to have stood for 'tough jeep' but it was really just a random body code name
LJ could mean 'long jeep' since the back part was extended but I suspect it was just a random body code name as well
YJ was named so because it happened to come out after the XJ (Cherokee) although people mess around and call it 'yuppie jeep'
JK has been rumored to stand for 'jeep king' but I think it is another random body code

I once had somebody driving a modified TJ reference the JK as "Just Kidding".

Of course, now he drives a JK on 37's with a supercharger...

I was told that it was actually supposed to be FJ but Toyota was using it so they used JK.

Speaking of Toyota, I walked by a Toyota pickup the other day, and could think of only one thing "TRD" (on the rear fender) could mean. Couldn't believe they would put that on their truck.
