JKU as a family car
All I have to say is that my family felt pretty badass driving up in our red doorless, modded JKU into a row of beige minivans at the family picnic. The other dads just stared and I saw them glance back to their buses and then the Jeep and I could actually see their dejected shoulders slump. It was glorious.

The back seat on the JKU sits a little too upright and is uncomfortable in stock form. I tipped mine back with 1/2" spacers and its waaaay more comfortable. There is a write up on how to do it in the write up section.
As for dependability, there are a ton of guys on here with NO porblems and there are a ton WITH problems just like any vehicle.
I would have to say your post is the best post I have read in this entire thread. I completely agree. I had the same thing happen to me at a soccer game. A guy looks at the Jeep and says... now thats a nice Jeep and he looks over at his wife.

The jeep is a fun family vehicle to enjoy driving everywhere on the pavement (doorless & topless) on sunny days and get to see many people's expressions wishing they had a cool jeep! The ultimate part of owning a jeep is enjoying some amazing adventures off-road into area's where not many people get to see and you get to do it with your family!!!
I'm able to fit two booster seats and another kid in the back....
But it is so much fun.... they all love it
Two of the kids age 6 and 7 have dificulties to get in, because of the height and I have stock Rubicon.

We have just recently purchased a JKU as a family car. I previously had a 2 door civic, and I endured rear facing car seats twice with that damn thing. I can't see any downside what so ever to a JKU after that. Beyond that I really don't mind the lack out power in the Jeep. In nearly 40 years I haven't managed the "drive like a lead footed a-hole" gene. So having a vehicle that can only hit 80mph when dropped from an airplane is probably the best for all involved.
I fix wrecks for the last 35 years or so. ALL vehicles, no matter the brand are subject to serious damage from a side hit. The JKU is tough as hell and will perform well in an accident. I would prefer side air bags in ANY vehicle offering them. They have NO effect on accident damage to the vehicle, they lessen the odds of your head getting smashed against the door glass. The JK has a relatively wide track, so a top- heavy worry is not really a factor when at stock height or therabouts. 1 1/2'' wheel spacers are a cure for any height mods. I hauled kids in my YJ, the JK is world's advanced over earlier versions. The AC is kick-butt and the heat ain't bad. If you buy the automatic install an auxillary tranny cooler. Based on MY experience I would recommend a JK. If you have any doubts, rent one for the weekend. I rented 2 of them there in the Islands.

As for track, the overall center of gravity of the Wrangler is higher than most vehicles - and by a lot. Track is calculated with this, it is a center of gravity - not measurement above ground of gravity. A Wrangler, especially a lifted one, will more likely roll in an accident - and this is a major cause of occupant injury or death.
Make no mistake about it, whatever the vehicle looks like after a wreck is irrelevant - the JK is a dangerous vehicle for the times. There really isn't much need to speculate about it because it has been/is studied all the time.
