Question JKU security box

I am looking at purchasing or DIYing a security box for the back of my Jeep and looking for help/recommendations. I have seen some DIYs that look great but I am not sure if I want to add the weight of wood and the possibility of it not being very weatherproof. I have looked at products on Tuffy, Quadtrac, and Extreme Terrain. Some other searches offered products from these websites but directed me to Amazon for pricing and purchase. Just looking for some ideas and trying to see what others have done. I want to be able to ride with the top off and have my stuff be somewhat secure and protected from the elements.

Welcome to JKF. I did the make my own (plans were somewhere 9 years ago) bolted down wood top, bolts down where the hard top bolts go. Covered with black outdoor carpet .. The MFG'd are very nice and metal.

I too made a "trunk" following a similar method as ronjenx plans years ago. I went the wood route as well and the downside is certainly the weight as you know, but it was the most useful thing I've done to the jeep and decade later it's still there. My trunk/storage is about 5" high and is hinged to lift up, and i have a top portion too that flips forward to create a flat cargo area when the seats are down. with top off and/or doors off, when I lock the jeep all my tools are safe and secure without fear of theft when the jeep is left unattended. My tub is bedlined, and I bedlined my full strutcture too so it's pretty weatherproof and been in a few downpours with no top...... obviously not a preferred thing. it also blends in seamlessly since it has the same bedliner as the rest of the tub.

I don't dislike many of the aftermarket options that are out there, but most of them are so pricey and have their own flaws. I feel like you can fabricate something that is a lot better tailored to your specific needs.
