MPG question (Don't shoot me!)
I know you folks are probably tired of all the mileage threads.
I have been searching through them, trying to see if I could get a fair estimate of what I could expect for mileage... and it's like searching for a needle in a haystack. Between differences in Jeeps, driving styles, etc... it's a total guess.
Yet, it is an important factor for me, as I want to get a handle on what my total cost to operate it will be... with fairly reasonable accuracy...
So I thought I would start yet one more thread, to see if I could find someone who would fit how I would use the Jeep, and the condition it is in.
So here goes...
Initially it would be stock for a while. What I have been considering is a Sahara with auto trans(I searched late last year but couldn't find any deals, picking the search back up again). I drive more highway than side streets, but not by much. Figure somewhere in the 55-60% range as highway. I know the EPA numbers, 15-19, and in general I usually come in somewhere in the middle. I am also interested in summertime mileage, when idling for warmth, winter blend gas, bad driving conditions, etc are not a factor.
I also previously owned and drove a TJ Sahara for about 5 years ago... and would normally see around 17 MPG in summer conditions. It was an '02, and still had the 3 speed auto, so no overdrive gear.
Should I expect equivalent mileage, better mileage, or worse mileage than my TJ?
Thanks all!

It will be about the same as your TJ auto, mine I'll do 70mph freeway and alot of in-town with the AC on, and it gets 18 to 19 mpg with stock tires.
I know I can get better mpg if I hold it to 55 mph and the windows rolled up
but who wants to get ran over by an 18 wheeler, when their doing 70 mph.

Nobody is going to shoot you. The only problem is I still don't think you will find what you are looking for. Everyones Jeep has different options, different mods, difference climates, different topology, different driving habits. All of these factor into what mileage you get.
With that said I usually average about 18.5- 19.5 with about 70% of that highway cruising about 70 mph. I can get 20-21 on trips on flat highway terrain. I have a 4 door, auto , Hardtop and 4.10 gears. I drive probably slightly harder than average.

I don't know if your looking at a 2 door or 4 door, but I get pretty good MPG with my 2 door(stock). My daily commute is no highway, 100% suburban driving. There are quite a few stop lights but not considered stop-and-go. Speeds go from 35-55 with about 40 being the average. I hand calculate my MPG often just out of curiosity and it turns out to be quite well for my conditions. My last tank I got 18.5 mpg. The highest I've seen a commuting tank go is just around 19mpg I believe. 18 mpg is about average.
I've taken my jeep on only a couple highway trips and it also did pretty good. I think the best I've gotten was around 21.5-22 mpg (don't quite remember) I usually will get 20.5-21mpg because I like to (or many times have to (go MI!)) go fast (80ish mph).
In the winter, yes my mpg goes down, and it sucks. It been awhile but I think I would average around 16.5 mpg on my commutes (17.5 would be a good tank). I guess a combination of fuel and traffic make this worse.
Overall I am pretty happy with the MPG on my jeep. This thing is not little and not aerodynamic so 18.5 mpg with no highway is good. I drive pretty carefully tho. When no one is around I drive to accelerate right at around 2,000 rpm (have a auto). But when people are around, I don't wanna be an ass so I go around 2.5. The few extra bucks is worth it all.

with our 2 door/auto/stock we get:
with top up & doors on - 22-23 (baby it)
with top up & doors on - 20-21 (run the hell out of it)
with soft down & doors on - 19-21
with doors off (top doesn't matter) - 17-18
hope that helps. my absolute best was almost 24, absolute worst was 13. wind plays a big role in mileage.

mine is still pretty much stock... still have the wrangler sr-a
6 speed
60% of my driving is highway
19.8 mpg overall
you can get pretty descent mpg on the highway.....it's the city driving that kills it....like 15 mpg.....still..... the 4.0l never got this kind of milage....for me anyway

We are running an '07 2 door X with 32 inch Rubicon take off wheels and tires and six speed stick and 3.21 diffs. If I drive and don't particularly go easy on the gas pedal I get 17-18 MPG. If I take it easy with the gas I can do about 19-20 MPG. When my wife drives it gets more like 15-16 MPG. I've pleaded with her to go easy on the gas pedal mashing but she claims she doesn't do that.
We drive mostly rural roads with a 55 MPH limit and city streets mixed about half and half. All in all, we get just about the same mileage that our '01 TJ with an auto trans got.

Here is my real numbers. 08 Unlimited X w/ 3.73's and Auto. Stock Goodyear SRA's (for now). About the same type of driving as you do, but I tend to lean on the skinny pedal quite a bit on the highway. (73-75)
14039.8 miles
767.4 gallons
18.2953 MPG, which includes one long family vacation, but again I averaged 75-78 MPH for that trip.
Probably slightly better than your TJ, but there is a lot more size to the 4-door.

There are so many variables (vehicle options, mods, driving style, terrain) that it is going to be tough to pin down an accurate number. I can tell you my previous Jeep was a daily driven TJ, 3spd auto and stock tires/wheels (30"). I regularly averaged about 18mpg in the summer. In my JK, I can regularly average 20-21mpg with the hardtop on, in the summer. Overall I consistenly average 2-3mpg better in the JK, assuming similar conditions.
I understand the comments about difficulty in really getting an accurate figure. However, with the responses so far, it appears to me that the JK may be turning in slightly better mileage by a MGP or two. Pearl-drum-man, sounds like you came from a similar TJ. Mine was auto, 30" tires, and although I got slightly less, you seem to have gotten significantly better mileage with the JK than the TJ.
