How many empty containers did you wind up with? A 1/2 quart won't hurt nothing.

An overfilled oil pan is well known for damaging main seals. Not sure how much it takes, but a quart is quite a bit.

Haven't tried it on a 3.8 but you can usually take a squeeze bulb and a long piece of small plastic tubing to suck a few ounces of oil out the dipsitck hole. Need a good fit between the bulb and the tube or you just suck air. Creativity and duct tape.

Otherwise you can try to let a qt. or so out the drain and stuff the plug back in. Kinda unpredictable and messy, but better than running overfull.

Its not as hard as it sounds to pull the plug and drain a quart out. The first time i changed the oil in my cj5 with a 258, i figured it took 6 quarts like all my 4.0s. found out it only takes 5 I cut the top off a 5 quart oil jug, and drained oil into it until it got up to the first quart line on the jug, then quickly got the drain plug back in. Ended up perfect on the dipstick reading

im pretty sure my dipstick has oil above all of the marks on it but i definitely only put 6 quarts in.. am i missing something??

-edit- maybe i got a false reading after measuring immediately following a driving trip. now that the jeep has been sitting it is showing oil above the safe zone but maybe like a quarter of an inch.. if thats not alright someone let me know haha

This seems to be a rather common thing for the JKs. I have read threads on it and mine does the same thing. When I put 6 quarts in, it reads 1/8" - 1/4" above the "full" mark as do many other JKs. Some people choose to fill it with only 5.5 quarts or so to not make it appear over full, but the manual calls for 6 and so I give it 6.

Also I think that the dipstick length varying by 1/4" is more likely than the manual, specifically written for the vehicle and engine telling us to add too much oil
