My wife got pulled over today......
Bravo to the Law Enforcement cats that are "keepin' it real" with an honest stop just to check out a hooked up Jeep. I concur with the last post...after 10-12+ hours of seeing humanity at its worst...it's refreshing to rock a human interest stop every once in awhile.

well go ahead and rip me a new one.... i've done this exact stop twice in the last few years...
i stopped a guy the first time i saw a 4 door wrangler just to check it out. it was a sunday afternoon, so i knew he wasn't going to be late for work, and when i walked up the first thing i said was that he was free to leave and had done nothing wrong, i just wanted to see his jeep. the whole thing went well, and i still see him every now and then when i'm in my rubi. he always waves.
more recently i stopped an older c3 corvette in a similar situation just to talk shop, and take a look.
you've got to realize that in a 12 hour shift of going from one messed up call to another dealing with people on what is usually one of the worst days they've ever had, sometimes it's nice to have an interaction with someone that won't end in taking someone to jail.
and as stated before, this kind of interaction with the public is good for PR...

X2
I was stopped on the way into a Moe's by two cops and had no problem with talking about Jeeps. However, being pulled over is an abuse of power technically.
I'd be glad it wasn't for a serious reason and laugh about it but I can think of a number of times when I'm on a time constraint that it would have pissed me off.

well, i like cutting people a break when i can. what i try to do, is stop people when i see a headlight/brake light out, or an inspection sticker that has recently expired... anything that i wouldn't normally write a ticket for.
i'll just let them know they need to take care of their vehicle, and if it's a jeep/sports car/older obviously restored vehicle, i'll compliment the driver or try to strike up a conversation about the vehicle.
maybe some of you don't think it's professional, and that's your opinion.. i won't argue that it is professional, but i've never had a complaint. i find the driver usually leaves happy, having not gotten a ticket and been complimented on his vehicle... and as i stated in an earlier post, i just like having a normal interaction with the public every so often. it's refreshing.

Im just throwing this out there but i think you have to have a reason to pull someone over, such as a traffic violation or any other unusual activity. But it is legal to stop someone as long as they know that they are free to leave, this is called a consentual encounter. But i am not sure if this applies to pulling someone over im pretty sure you need to have reasonable suspicion of a criminal activity or traffic violatoin to pull someone over.
Although i would think its pretty cool to get pulled over just because a cop thought my jeep was sick, but if i was headed to an appointment and was late because of the incident i would be pissed. Especially if i was doing something Air Force related and got my butt chewed by my commander for being late!

I know you all agree this is a good pull-over story, and nothing bad came of it.
However, it shows the cop is prone to inappropriate behavior on the job. Especially the one where he told the driver to step out of the vehicle so he could sit in it. Yah, he asked, but who would say no. Not to mention the risk of being exposed to passing traffic.
How many of you would pull over if a stranger (civillian) waved you over just to look at and sit in your Jeep?
Totally inappropriate use of his authority. (And I don't say "totally" very often.)

And last, they don't need to pull you over to tell you they wanna check out your jeep. They have PA's and all know how to use them. I was asked to stop once to check out my Jeep, and I said back (over my PA) that I was on my way to work, and follow me. He did, we talked for 5 minutes and I went into work. And he told me he was on his lunch (it was about 1:45PM).
As soon as those lights come on, it is considered an arrest... By utilizing the lights on a police cruiser, an officer is exerting his law given authoriy and powers of arrest... How would that be considered consentual?
