New to JKs
I’m currently looking at two jeeps both have terraflex lifts and are running 37s with 4.88 gears. I’m going to DD and use it around the farm as I live in the country and about 15 miles to town and half hour from large city. I want to save miles and wear on my dually. What can I expect for mileage out of this thing. I know it won’t be as good as stock. Anything I should really look at closely on them one is a 2012 with manual and the other is a 2015 automatic. Only reason I’m getting one is my ex wife got the pre-runner and I’m starting over again. Don’t have many trails other than what’s out here in the pasture and the back roads. Like said this will be first wrangler I’ve had. What should I expect out of this. Or will I absolutely hate it set up like this? Any helpful insight would be much appreciated.
For a DD, my preference is stock. Why not start with the that? I have a 2012 stock jku with 3.73 gears. Manual trans. I've towed a 5000 pound trailer all over NJ, PA, and VA with it. I've never found a snowstorm that would get it stuck. It just plain works in the stock config. I now have 100,000 miles on it and keep detailed records including every single gas fill up. On average, I get 17mpg. A Coworker of mine has a 2012 rubi with 4.10 gears and 35" tires. He only gets about 13-14 mpg on average.
Fuel economy will suck, ~14 like stated above....but the fun factor should outweigh that. Depending on lift height, you might check to see if front drive shafts have been replaced, and if caster has been corrected. Do the jeeps have adjustable control arms, control arm drop brackets, or cam bolts? Since someone has taken the time to regear, there's a good chance they've at least lifted correctly. Typically I'd say you're better off NOT buying a lifted jeep, but rather buying stock and doing everything yourself.
