Default New MPG standards for 2016 - A 30 MPG JK?

The Government just announced new fuel economy standards thru 2016. Light truck will need to get 30 MPG. I was wondering just how Jeep will meet those requirements for the JK?

Easily. The diesel 6 speeds in Europe are already getting 30mpg's. That's why we're frustrated that the diesel isn't offered in the Wrangler in the U.S. at the moment, yet is offered in the Patriot.

Most engines are designed to get 30mpg+. Look up the Geico Challenge. I believe that's what it was called. Anyway, it was a challenge that these top engineers underwent to see how much more mpg they can get out of a mustang engine, without the use of aftermarket components. This was a while back, but I do believe one of the teams averaged close to 50mpg without negatively effecting the engine's performance.

Oh, and x2 on Spartan99's comment.

So we might actually have a diesel JK by 2016?

Actually the government has not passed the "law" for those requirements. It is in talks. Think about it, our poor economy does not allow for automakers to shell out the money for the R&D and expenses needed to develop/produce a truck that makes 30mpg. Maybe 25mpg, but 30 is stretching it.

The only way they'd get me to sell my Jeep for another new one is if they offer a diesel. 30 mpg would be easily obtained.

The way Manley is running things, the 2016 JK will probably be the chromed out Wrangler EV with color matching hard top, and Spartan99 and I will still be waiting for the CRD version.

Is that for each individual vehicle or does the overall line need to average that?

For some reason, back a few years, when this was brought up, that was something that was said.
