slower is probably safest depending on the mud. If there's a lot of water you need to know how deep it is. 4wl is probably the best before you get stuck.
although I find mud fun, its too much work after your done.
Which Springield are you in?

Third gear in 4L or first gear in 4H. I suspect that comment was directed at drivers of manual transmissions (I are one).

use 4 lo , traction control will be turned off automaticly

use 4hi , traction control must be turned off manually

4lo stresses your trans and engine less, with aggressive oversized tires the pathetic excuse for an engine has to really rev to make power, with my setup 4lo and 1st or second gear is all i can use to really spin the tires....which is key in mud

good luck and slow down

you will get stuck!!!!, thats half the fun LOL --- i agree with the 4lo, i don't use 4hi to much, just 4lo and pick whatever gear you need - just don't do what a lot of new drivers do and drive it in 4lo going 30mph in 1st on hard packed dirt before the mud -- you could break something

Water=Slow in fact very slow depending on depth. The last thing you want is a lot of water over the hood or even in the engine compartment (without a snorkle and other mods). It is bad very very bad not to mention new motors are expensive. As to driving through mud it would depend on the mud and mud depth (some look harmless but are bottomless while some are a thin sheet). Personally I have used 4 hi for slippy thin mud and usually have a little speed to it with no problems. For thick goopy stuff 4 lo is best and be aware you will get stuck. BTW there is no manual or directions for driving through mud because all mud is not the same. The only way to learn how to drive through mud is to do it and do a variety of it because here in our area we have thick black goop, red clay, black clay, and what I refer to as swamp soup (which is the worst). Of course this is just a small sample of they types of mud because we have everything from beaches (no beach driving) to mountians (no trails I am aware of) so we see a lot of variety in this state.
