from all the years i have of driving through mud, and i do live in FL...4 low is not the best...its geared to low, and there is to much torque...all you do is spin your tires....try 4hi first...if that doesnt get it done, try 4 low...but i have always had better luck in 4hi then 4low....if you have a 6speed....try 4 low, but 5th gear...(rubicon) or 3rd gear non rubicon.

I think some good advice is don't go alone. If you get stuck or worse, broke down, your gonna want a friend there who can pull you out. Also from my experience, if you go fast through watery mud, it can go through the air filter. It did it on a friends JK too. When your done, wash at least the engine off when you get home. I think 4lo is has a bit too much torque for a muddy trail and you wont get anywhere fast. 6th gear on 4lo seems roughly equal to 1st gear in hi.

Yeah, the JK isn't lacking for torque, just HP. I was saying that for a muddy trail, 4 low is a bit much. He should probably avoid the 2 ft deep mud puddles on the first time out. But if it does get bad, then yes shift to 4 low and spin the wheels fast enough that they have a chance to clean themselves.

Third gear in 4L or first gear in 4H. I suspect that comment was directed at drivers of manual transmissions (I are one).

I always keep it in 4 lo before I go into anything, you never know how bad it really is. I always go slow when going through the thick stuff, you have a better chance to correct yourself at lower speeds.
