Default Oil Change

So at 2703 miles I got the oil changed, the "Change Oil" ding and message.

The dealer used 5w30 oil, hmmmmm...

They forgot to reset the ding and message, hmmmmm...

The cap is on I checked it after turning the corner.

I asked about their use of 5w30 they said
"5w20 is to thin, not enough viscosity."

I know I have a good dealer now.

Guess your dealer knows more about the 3.8L than the engineers who designed it

I wonder if they used a synth blend or regular old dino?

I just had mine in for its first change at 3000. I had them put synthetic in. They used a 5w30 too. I think Im going to continue to take it to the dealer. Its a block from my house, the owners are good people, and $20 for an oil change seems like a good deal to me. ($40 for the synth oil and filter....what you would pay if you bought it yourself). They did also forget to reset the change oil indicator, but its easy to do and in the manual.

Not that I think there is a big difference between 5W-30 and 5W-20 but the owner manual says 5W-20 so that is the only thing I will put it in. I can't believe a dealer would tell you that. I just don't know what this world is coming to. It sounds to me like they don't want to carry an extra type of oil in stock.

It cost > $30
I have to assume it was dino because it wasn't $40-50
When we go to SD/WY/CO this summer I'll change to synthetic.
My dealer is about 8 blocks away so thats where I'll keep going. I use to do all the regular maintenance myself but when I thought about it I was spending more on supplies and time then it cost me to have the dealer do the work.

Go to Parts store get the oil and filter, buy other crap "wow thats cool" 20 min.
20 minutes oil change
Go back to the Parts store to get rid of oil and filter 20 min.
If I bill for the time at what I get paid

I'm not saving money having the dealer do the change but I'm saving time. That and everyone needs to make a living

To reset your change oil message, do the following:

With the key in the off position, turn it only far enough forward that it turns on the radio and fan. Then within the next 5 seconds, press the accelerator to the floor three full times.. then turn the key off after the third time you step on the accelerator. The next time you start your Jeep, the message should be cleared for another 5k miles.

I'm on the fence about this myself, granted I'm not even to 600 miles yet. In the past I've done all my own oil changes using mobil1 and a good filter. The couple times I've gotten lazy...usually in the winter...I cringe when I see the bill for a synthetic oil change from the dealer. They have the $20 change which is not synthetic, at least not full which is only a little cheaper than if I do my own full syn change. Their full syn change is a good 10-15 or so more.

What I am on the fence about is staying within the guidelines of the lifetime powertrain warranty. -Do I bring it in and trust their record keeping and quality of service...do I trust my own record/receipt keeping?

I'm not all scientific about oil but my other thought is if I do just have the dealer do it and go for the $20 changes will I really lose anything other than bonding time with vehicle? As long as I keep the changes regular I would think I would be ok...but there is something about doing it yourself.

Here's another thought are you guys doing the standard 3k miles change? The maintenance log is written as such that changes would be at 6k miles...which is fine for synthetic but wouldn't this be pushing the dyno oil's capabilities?

That seems mighty early to get the change oil message. The owners manual says 6000 miles.

I had just gotten my oil change at 5 Minute oil change its a drive through stay in your car place. They ended up putting 5W30, I noticed when I got home and looked at my receipt, but apparently that's not a problem.
