Default Oil Change?

So the manual says at 6K then at 12K..

Is this normal? I mean we don't have synthetic oil in our Jeeps. That seems like an awful long time between oil changes..

Also how often is everyone rotating tire? Every 3K?

I had my first change done at 3k well, 3100. There are several topics about oil here with similar questions.

Some cars go much, much longer. Many VW's have a 10k oil change spec and they seem to last just fine. Oils are better than they used to be, 3k oil changes are good for Iffy-Lube but wasteful. Why not trust the built-in oil change calculator? Why is "some guy on the internet" or the pimple-faced kid at the quickie-change place a better information source than the manufacturer?

I think for me this first 3k change was more of a break-in change...the motor should be about broke in and I figured some clean oil won't hurt. I will change again at 6k and then see how I feel about it and maybe go to the every 6k change as the manual states. -I think I would trust the oil change indicator about as much as I trust the MPG display.

Follow the schedule in the manual based on your driving conditions and you'll be fine.

My oil change light came on at 2600 miles, so we're not far apart. Why would you not trust the indicator?

My mileage display is within a couple of percent of reality; last fill up calculated out at 19.9, display said 20.2, which is pretty good.

I keep computers running for a living...about the time I start letting them tell ME what to do when is when the world will end.

-ok that was mostly paranoia humor but seriously I'd rather go by a set schedule for oil changes that is proven (or at least specified by jeep) than rely on sensors that are know to skew results. If you've seen any of the oil indicator threads they come on all different mileage points. While you could argue that it is based on driving styles...I would like to know more about the sensors and the system that determines when oil needs to be changed. At the very least if you care at all about your warranty you should follow the manual's 6k specification which is what I will probably do once I get the 3k oil change standard/recommendation/habit out of my system.

Ha! "Iffy Lube" -- But I still like my years-old name for them -- "Risky Lube" -- ever since I brought in my Mercedes 300D and said YES to a differential fluid change -- they took out the old fluid VERY well! But forget one thing... you guessed it!

I had my oil changed this week at the dealership on the JK -- 1677 miles but I'd already owned it for 6 months so it was time... always feel better to have fresh oil!
